The guy must have had talent coming out of college. Maybe it's another reclamation project for Kevin Coyle, by all accounts he did wonders with Reggie Nelson
And Coyle also had success with former Fins washouts Chris Crocker and Gibril Wilson. It's not an upgrade over Bell, keep in mind, Johnson lost his job in Minnesota. But, he's got a ton more speed (ran a 4.42 at the 2008 combine). He's also pretty smart (graduated with an MIS degree, and is pursuing a Master's). In college, he set conference records for tackles by a DB and interception return yardage. So, maybe he just didn't fit with Minnesota's system. He said he chose Miami based on Coyle's explanation of the defense. Coyle doesn't use traditional free and strong safeties, he likes them to be interchangeable.
Personally, I like these kinds of moves. I like signing experienced guys who have talent, but maybe weren't great fits with how they were used. We are bringing in Quentin Groves for a visit, too. He fits that mold. I hope we sign him.
Nice report there dolphanmark. Based on Coyle's success with former washouts I'll be optimistic, because it is a fact that players must fit the system they're in.

Evidently, Johnson just didn't fit in Minny, along with injuries.
What is stupid is the headline I just read in the Herald on-line: "found new starting strong safety." What?
He was a disappointment in Minn for his 4 years, and he also had a DUI in 2011.
This guy may compete for the starting job, but he is our "new starting SS"? I don't think so.
I also read where Miami is still (probably) going to draft a safety.
