actually berk according to the new rules we had til sept 25 of 2011 to work out a long term deal. we couldn't extend him from that date until our season was over.

As for trading, we could work out a deal when we have exclusive rights to Paul but with Paul still untagged. In the language of the deal the first step would be to franchise him. It's not like we have to tag him before we can talk to anyone. We will have exclusive rights for a while and we can start talking to teams NOW about potential deals. I think the tagging him and getting stuck with him is a possibility but a very very minor one that some of you are blowing out of proportion.

By the way, we could definitely get a 2nd for Soliai and probably another later pick or future pick. I'm thinking 2nd rounder this year and 4th rounder this year or 3rd rounder the following year.

Exactly Mark.

Now if we could sign him to a deal like Wilfork...5 years 40 mill...then maybe we could deal him.

Perhaps that could even be worked out prior to the start of the new league year...but Soliai is going to want to pick his landing spot, and frankly, why would he want to have that team give up picks for his services when he can just go there as a free agent or force us to pay him $15 mill for next year?

Ummm...franchise tag for him this year is $15 mill. We just paid him $12.5M.

For us to keep him and trade him we have to tag him for $15 mill and then trade him to a team that can absorb that deal. If we got stuck with him because we couldnt find a team to trade him to WE'D BE PAYING HIM $15M.

Yeah...except that I said $10-15 mill... based on the high end being$15 with us stuck with him after franchising him and 10 being the low end of a renegotiation with any team we were fortunate enough to pawn him off on.

Please try to keep up.

I'm not a great typist and its a bitch to keep repeating myself.

Berk...and what happens if Soliai says "no" to any renegotiation?

You have to plan for that, considering we couldn't work out a long term deal before the lockout or early this year when we had a small window.

We'd be stuck paying him $15mill.

So you can't say "Nobody is going to pay him $15 million" when you plan has a solid chance of FORCING us to do just that.

Spot on 1423..

Of course...Soliai is in the same position as Peyton Manning. Why should he do your old team a favor by forcing his new team to cough up picks for him when he can wait us out and go there as a free agent.

Good point and that is what makes him so difficult to sign and trade. The best thing for Miami to do is to sign him long term. We can still trade him at some point or we can just keep him since he is a Pro Bowl NT. Having him remain with the team would be the most positive outcome, if we can sign him to a slightly smaller deal than Wilfork got.

I wonder how much money he wants?

well that's why I spend time on this site. Lots of intelligent posters with good info. I still think it is worth taking the risk of tagging him. I find it unlikely that one of the 3-4 teams with no NT wouldn't make it happen and trade for Solia and give him an extension---worth the risk IMO, we simply cannot be letting Pro Bowl players at premium positions go for nothing. I mean who does that? I can't think of one instance off the top of my head in the past 5 years or so (premium positions= QB, NT, LT, etc)

Let him go. Use his money elsewhere.

It is really amazing to see people think we could get 1st round pick for Solia.

If someone HAS to sell something no one pays full price for it.

Correct. So just let him go to become someone else's high paid player.
