If true that's very disturbing.
The only way that is acceptable is if you think McCoy and Philbin are equal.

I could see this if Nolan was still our DC...but Bowles??! Why would Ross have so much faith in a guy that's never done that job?
If this is true, it's a head scratcher for the simple fact, that they should let the new coach pick his own staff, I actually hope Bowles stays on as DC for the continuity effect, but I would hope that that's really what Philbin wants.
No problem with Bowles, but not as DC when he has never been one, but I guess anyone can get promoted, but he was DB coach and the secondary wasnt that impressive
While Philbin was coaching at WPI, Kevin Coyle was the defensive coordinator for Holy Cross. Both colleges are in Worcester, MA, so there is a connection there and maybe that's where they've known each other since then. Worcester isn't a very big town. They also both coached at the Merchant Marine Academy, although it was years apart.
doubt mangini comes back for a DC job. Winston Moss has Miami ties (UM) and he was supposed to be a solid HC candidate (Raiders?) so maybe he's a DC possibility. I am OK with or without Bowles.
I bet Mike Sherman becomes the OC.
Bottom line, the owner OWNS the team, and if he wants Bowles as DC then whoever the HC is has to be OK with that. As long as that’s disclosed in the interview process all parties are operating in clear air.
Beyond that I doubt this was the one defining issue that led to Philbin, but if the score was somehow tied on all other fronts, maybe…
Bowles as DC could be a really good thing or not. It’s an unknown in relation to someone like Nolan for example.
As far as the D:
Be aggressive. Really aggressive. Terminate the Lady’s career in NE.

Nolan was aggressive on defense... but only during the first 3 1/2 quarters! He always seemed to use some type of "prevent" defense at the end which led to quite a few losses. And, look at the second game against NE: we had Brady down and out in the first half, and lost in the second half. Why? NE made adjustments in their blocking schemes to protect Brady, and Nolan failed to make counter adjustments to continue putting pressure on Brady.
This is why I want new coaches on defense. Nolan built a good run defense, but a poor pass defense... too bad it's a passing league now. The secondary was the weak link of the defense; why would its coach even be considered as the new DC?
I believe Nolan calling it in at the end of the game was all Tony Saprano and his "Play not to lose" mentality. Hopefully that element is finally gone.
