How do we get a franchise QB
Posted by: Finshady ()

This what we need in order to be a dominant team again. The question is simple how do we get a franchise QB without ruining our team in the process. Anyone got any reasonable ideas. Too me it has to be trading or signing Matt Flynn from the Packers. He sure seems like he is ready to become a star in this league. Trade for Peyton manning if he can play 3-4 more years that would solve alot of this teams problems. I do not trust the draft because we have been burned too many time before. Any one else got any suggestions.

How do you get a franchise QB?

History tells that you have to draft one in the 1st round.

Right, A & O, but the caution should be not to be so desperate that you try to force a square peg into a round hole. In this instance what that means is that if Luck and RGIII are gone, do you let your desperation lead you to draft someone else in the first round that may not be worth.

Of course, you're not saying that yourself but I thought I would throw it out because other quarterbacks are now being suggested in a manner that leads me to believe desperation is setting in.

Absolutely not. Franchises that do things like that are the ones who are mediocre for eternity.

What you do is, offer the farm for the guy(s) who you feel are the real deal, franchise QB. If you come up short, you take the BPA.

What is the definition of a franchise Qb?

Is it a Qb who puts up big stats?Ex.D.Marino, M.Vick, P.Rivers,J.Cutler, M. Ryan, M. Schaub, D. Mcnabb, D. Bledsoe,C.Palmer

Is it a Qb who wins a superbowl?ex. P.Manning, J.Elway, B. Johnson,T. Dilfer, D. Brees, A. Rodgers,E. Manning, T. Brady, J. Montana
, B. Favre,K. Warner, B. Roethlisberger, T .Aikman

Are C.Ponder, T.Tebow, C. Newton, A. Dalton, A. Smith, B. Gabbert, J. Flacco, S. Bradford, K .Orton, M. Sanchez, R. Fitzpatrick, M. Sanchez, M.Cassel, M.Stafford, M.Hasselbeck, J.Freeman, C.Pennington franchise Qb's?

I would say it is just different peoples opinions that there is no way to actually label someone a franchise qb and many other factors come into play such as coaching, defense, strength of schedule, division, system, and surrounding talent, etc.

a franchise qb is one who can put the team on his back and pass for 400 yards when nothing else is working and lead the team to the win.
A franchise QB is someone who when they get the ball with under 2 min left needing a TD to win, you feel much better being the offense than the D.

Franchise QB--marino, elway, montana, brady, rogers, etc
Not franchise QB---cassel, fitzpatrick, orton, etc.

Marino, yes. Matt Moore, no.

Many of the guys I listed above are capable of that definition. Fitzpatrick threw for big time yards this season and led a couple of last minute drives to beat quality teams.

really? I am not aware of Fitz's reputation as a clutch player who leads the team to last minute wins. I can't think of one

He threw for 369 yds in a win against NE this year. K. Orton threw for like 467 yds in a game when he was with McDaniels in denver but they lost. Flynn threw for 500yds.

You listed 1 game. Im pretty sure Jay Fiedler threw for 300 yards during 1 game, too.

Did that make Jay Fiedler a franchise QB?

you ignored my main point about what makes a franchise QB. it was NOT stats. It was when the QB makes plays---with the game on the line, and when the rest of the team is playing badly. It's the confidence you have that he will make the play. I doubt anyone who has watched Orton and Fitz play very much has any confidence that with the game on the line they will throw a TD rather than an INT. it's why Henne so clearly is never going to be a franchise guy, despite throwing for 400 yards vs the pats this year.

If anybody wants to know what a franchise QB is, and how important he is to a team...

right now is the best time to ask...go find a Colts fan.

Simply put, a franchise quarterback is a guy that consistently plays well and does not commit mistakes that hurt his team with reguarity. A franchise guy is a guy that can be relied upon to elevate his game and make things happen even when the other team knows exactly what, when, and where, he's going to do it....a guy that CAN be slowed down but never completely stopped.

Examples: Marino, Unitas, Montana, Manning, Brady, Favre, etc.

Note: Hall of Fame credential are NOT required to fit the bill.

Examples: Rivers, Bledsoe, Romo, etc.

I wouldn't put Romo in there. He is as likely to cost the team a game with a bonehead play with the game on the line, as win it. He's got the stats but is too inconsistent when it counts.

Also Bledsoe and Rivers are a clear notch below the Marino and Bray's of the world

Brees threw for lots of yards and had lots of interceptions and not much success in San Diego but he turned it around in New Orleans.

How do we get a franchise QB?

Well for us Dolphin fans we have to turn on the playstation and pop madden in then make a trade because quite frankly that's the only way we're ever gonna see one again sad smiley

But hopefully hell freezes over and Ross decides enough is enough and pays whatever the price is for Luck or RG3, and I honestly don't care anymore how many draft picks we have to give up to make that happen.

So Brees was not "franchise" until he got to N.O.. That would tend to suggest that by himself Brees IS NOT elite until surrounded by just the right combination of coaches, team, environment, chemistry.

You can argue about how to define franchise qb for weeks.

Here's the definition of a "franchise qb" that I use to keep it simple...

If I'm a gm and I wake up in the morning without my first thought being "how the fu@k am I going to get a good qb?".....
Then my current qb is a "franchise qb."

So much discussuion my definition of a franchise QB is simple. We shut Tom Brady out in the 1st half of the last game between us correct. second half he starts throwing to who we aren't or can't cover consistantly, and they come back and win 27-24. Any other QB besides Brady in our division, and we win that game impressively. Brady comes out in the second half to throw the ball to people we are covering although not as good as we need to in order to stop completions and they score 27 albiet with some mistakes on our part. That's what a franchise QB does. He lifts up the whole, and can will them to a win when their not supposed to win that day. ala Marino. Belecheat is not that great of a coach take away Brady, and you will find that piece of shit team will become very average right away. Another example is Manning just look at the Colts record this year without him enough said. So the point is we need to get one, and bad or we will spend the next decade mired in mediocrity. I want to win and I mean every season. Ross if you listening get a damn franchise QB or you will lose this fast dwindling fan base of yours.

Eveyone here wants us to have that guy too. The problem is that without the following items it won't happen.

1. Luck, a great deal of it. (the rabbits foot kind not the QB kind)
2. Coaching
3. Talent
4. The right system
5. Chemistry
6. Luck again, with injuries this time

We can take Luck, Griffin, or whomever, but it does not mean we are going to get the right guy and have all of those things happen in just the right preportions to make him great.

If Brees had come to the Phins there is no guarentee that he'd have fared any better then Culpepper did...

That said we still have to try, and that means plucking one or two, but we dare not mortgage the future to do it. JMO

I think we can all agree that it's better to have a franchise QB than a Sanchize QB.

Sanchez has won 32 games in 3 years.
