A team source says that Chicago Bears special teams coordinator Dave Toub will interview with the Miami Dolphins for their vacant head-coaching position according to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune.
Bears coach Lovie Smith said he is hopeful of retaining Toub but acknowledged that Toub has aspirations of moving up the ranks in the NFL. A source said the Dolphins were granted permission to interview Toub, 49, who has been the Bears' special teams coordinator under Smith for eight seasons.
“Dave has been here every day that I've been here,” Smith said at his end-of-season news conference Monday afternoon. “So, I think it's pretty safe to say that I kind of like what he does and he likes it around here. But in the same sense I know that Dave has goals too that he would like to get accomplished. And every coach on our staff, especially coaches who have been on the staff for eight years, you would like to see them take another step. I know one of the things Dave would like to do is someday be a head football coach and hopefully he has that opportunity some day.”
Does it seem weird to be looking at a special teams coach for a HC position? Has this transition been made successfully in the past and I am just overlooking it?
Thoughts? or info.

If we end up with Toub as HC I'm sure the debate will fly.
The thing about Toub is that he's a good ST coach and his contract is up. Chicago gets 15 days exclusive negotiating rights, and if Miami puts a request to interview him for HC, Toub may not sign within those 15days.
This may just as easily be a play to get him as an ST coach.
good point dolfanmike. i saw your thread a while ago sleekdog but i wasn't sure why we would be looking at a guy like this. what dolfanmike says makes sense.
Cowher was an DC at least 4 years before then he coached DB's. His first year in coaching he coached ST. Schottenheimer was a LB coach for several teams before he became a DC/HC. Harbaugh is a totaly different story his father was a college HC and he probably could coach any position. OC DC or ST. This Toub talk is dumb but this is the Dolphins
