Figured I/we might as well go on the record with this now before the off-season rumor mill gets going:
My top three, most probable, options for our starting QB spot next season:
1) Tony Romo... Odds: Even
2) Peyton Manning... Odds: 3-2
3) Matt Flynn... Odds: 5-1
#1 hinges on how the Peyton Manning thing plays out.
If Indy takes Luck #1 (and they should). Manning gets cut.
If he gets cut there are 3 really good landing spots for him. In reverse order they are: SF, Miami and Dallas.
Jones can't pass up Manning for next 3 years with that receiving corps and Romo will have worn out his welcome after the Giants end the Cowboys season tonite.
Manning goes to Dallas. They trade Romo to Ireland who will be desperate for a QB knowing if he goes into next year with Matt Moore at QB he'll be gone in January.
#2 happens if Romo gets the Boys in the playoffs and wins a game and Luck goes to Indy.
#3 Happens if Indy hangs onto Manning and trades out of the top spot.
Anything other than one of those options will cost Ireland his job.

He single handedly cost them 2 or 3 games with epic level late game screw ups this year. That could be the difference between having a home game or two in January and being left without a chair once the music stops.
In general, Cowboys fans (and Jerry Jones) are like UCLA fans in hoops or ND fans in football. They believe they are ENTITLED... That post season success and titles are their birthright.
For all his nice stats, Romo has come up very small in every big spot he's been in. Fans are getting frustrated...so is ownership.
If Manning hits the open market, Jones will fall all over himself to get him to Dallas. Besides...its a better scenario to sell:
Hall of fame/Super Bowl MVP QB for nothing but ca$h...trade Romo for Picks that are used to improve the O-line.
Or
Status quo for next year and hope the 20th pick gets us to the post-season.

Actually, I don't consider Romo in Miami to be beneficial to anyone but Dallas. I'm not a big fan.
And I never suggest Romo would get cut. Only that a desperate Ireland would pounce on the opportunity to get fleeced in acquiring his "discovery". Especially after missing out on Manning.
But there is no denying the fact that a healthy 35 year old Peyton Manning plus a couple of more high draft picks makes the Boys a better title contender than what they are looking at going into next year with Romo.
Guaranteed that if Manning hits the open market (and I think he will) then

There will be PLENTY of Manning/Cowboy rumors for the next 3 months if they lose tonight.
And when that happens Romo is going to need a landing spot. Hmmm...what team needs a QB, has a Cowboys pipeline, and is in a different conference and has a GM that DESPERATELY needs to hitch his star to a franchise QB and will over pay for a 2nd tier guy?
Its really not much of a stretch to see that scenario playing out. Especially after the Cowboys lose the division tonight to the Giants.
I honestly don't see Manning hitting the open market. His presence single handily got them a new stadium built, I don't see Irsay turning his back on that. They may still draft luck and sit him for a year or two ala Rogers in G Bay, but I don't see him getting cut ESPECIALLY after the 28 mil roster bonus he has coming in March. Could be wrong but I don't see it.

Here's the problem(s) for Indy and why they can't have both Manning and Luck.
1) the idea that Luck will peacefully forgo the first 3-4 years of what I'm sure he thinks will be a HOF career sitting behind Manning because Rodgers did it in GB is a fallacy. Rodgers was NOT the #1 overall pick and he was not a "once in a generation" type prospect. The two situations couldn't be more dissimilar. To compare them is a red-herring.
2) Salary Cap. If you pick up Manning's 3 year option and pay him $28 mill bonus and you pay Luck $7 mill a year you have $35 mill tied up in a position where only one can play and you've done next to nothing to find the pieces Manning will need to compete while simultaneously handcuffing the team salary cap-wise with two high paid QB's.
3) $$$ The colts, cannot trade manning until march. Indy have to cut him or pay the bonus 5 days before that. Manning is not going to rework his deal so they can trade him first. He's not going to force his new team to give up picks when they could get him as a free agent. If they pick up that option and dole out $28 mill up front to do so they will have to keep Manning for at least two years or suffer a huge cap hit. They aren't likely to do that.
4) Talent. they won 2 games this year. They have now O-line and their top Wr and TE are getting old. Their defense sucks. To "commit" to Manning for the short term out of loyalty and then NOT turn your most valuable asset (#1 overall pick) into personnel that can help him win isn't committing to Manning. it's playing things half way.
Bottomline is the Colts need to make a choice and commit to it. Luck or Manning. If they try to do both they waste Manning's twilight years and slow Luck's development without making either of them happy. That would be a vary bad way for them to approach it.
I've been to a lot of Colts games, you see a ton of Tennessee liscence plates. They unceremoniously dump Manning for an unknown commodity and they will lose a lot of season ticket holders. As far as having a boat load of money tied up in the QB position, they did it this year with manning and Collins.

Nah. ChyrenB hates it so I think its here for good.

Collins made $4 mill this year and what other Impact FA moves did they make? Could they make? Having Manning make $28 mill a year is absurd anyway. that alone cripples their cap. Adding another $7+ per year to that without adding someone that is actually going to play only makes it worse.
Their defense is putrid. Reggie Wayne is 35 years old, Dallas Clark is 32 and you want them to use the top pick on a guy who won't contribute one lick to Manning's success?
I hope they do it. More players for us to go after in free agency.

You know me. I'm on the: "do whatever you have to do to get a franchise QB and then build from there" team.
I don't know how we do it.
Same team needs as last year:
QB
RG
RT
TE (receiving)
could use another WR
OLB
SS
FS
Assuming you can keep all the good players we have, I don't see how we fill all those needs.
We are to low in the draft at #9 to expect to move up for RG III. No other QB in the draft is worth rolling the dice on at #9 except Jones and that's a BIG gamble.
I'm not interested in bailing out the Cards on Kevin Kolb.
I'm not a Tony Romo fan despite the fact I can easily see him ending up here if Peyton Manning gets cut.
I like Daboll and Nolan but not sure either of them will be kept by whomever we get at HC.
I think this team is close to being pretty good. Just missing that difference maker at QB and a better right side of the o-line.
I guess I'd focus on my HC coach this year. I think my list right now is Jeff Fisher, Jon Gruden, Jay Gruden, Pete Carmichael (in that order).
I sign Flynn or Peyton Manning when he gets cut.
I trade down in the draft a few times and take DeCastro (G) from Stanford, get a TE, OLB and OT in the draft and pick up a few selections next year that allow me to make a run at a top QB like Barkley if Flynn doesnt pan out or Manning doesnt become available or goes elsewhere.

Romo??? we'll see...they are getting SMOKED tonight.
Manning...yes damaged goods but only costs $$ after he's cut. If they keep him...its a moot point. They aren't paying him $28 mill to trade him and take a $28 mill cap hit next year.
Flynn...best option out there age-wise and won't cost picks or assets.
Moore? You do realize you are falling in love with someone elses back up there don't you?
Besides, if you can look at Moore and see him as the answer to our QB woes then there really isn't much left to discuss is there?

I can live with that if we moved up to draft a QB this year.
If we didn't, and we didn't stockpile picks in next years draft, then there really won't be much of a reason to expect better than 5-10 to 8-8 for the next 3+ years...and frankly...that's far too depressing to contemplate at this point in the new year.
Too many screw ups. Big Jerry will be looking for a replacement.
But do we really want Romo? I put him in the same category as Sanchez: Overhyped, but on a good team. Really, Romo is not nearly as good as some (mainly Dallas fans) would like to think.

That's cold. Sanchez? Ouch...
I think he's more like Matt Hasselbeck. Pretty good, not great. Will blow more big games than he steals.

Thanks for making me spit my coffee all over my screen.
I would not get all upset if we started Moore next year. The guy earned the job. Other teams have gotten rid of up and coming QB's unknowingly, so I do not buy into any of the notion that he is a "career backup". Very few have the "it" factor from the start...and the better one's had good teachers before they dropped the clipboard and doned a helmet.
If we draft somebody that is good enough to beat him out in camp then I am all for that competitive result, but please do not trade this guy and keep Sage or Chad as your backup. Moore got us a win once again behind a banged up O-Line and no starting RB against a team with everything to play for. But then again that team has a "franchise" QB. What's his name??? Stinkchez?

They can't trade him without picking up his option first. That means they have to pay him $28 million for the right to trade him.
Considering that he's 35 and coming of his 2nd neck surgery...what GM is going to give them anywhere near the package of draft picks they'd need to justify paying $28 million of his salary and eating it as empty cap space next year?
Trading him isn't "messy". Its not an option.

Of course not...He's headed to Dallas. Romo will end up in Miami...
