True, but many of those teams took a guy that filled a need and/or panned out to be a good pick.
The Dolphins passed on Darrel Green, Henry Ellard, Darryl Talley, and Roger Craig all in one draft. That year...they took Dan Marino.
in the past few years....when we pass on future stars like Drew Brees, Anquoin Boldin, Darrel Reevis....it is for guys like Jamar Fletcher.... that LB whose name I can't recall, or Ted Ginn. Jr ( respectively).
We pass on can't miss guys...to roll the dice on some 'high risk/high reward' guy that proves we are smarter than everyone else. Oops...that didn't work out so well.
another difference is it's not like we are taking the guy who made sense at the time. in most all of these whiffs we take both a person at a less important position/one we don't need as much, who is lower rated than where we took him, and pass on the higher rated guy at a glaring need position. the picks are not just bad in hindsight, they were bad at the time.
