San Diego suffered from being one-dimensional. They had the same issue as Miami with Marino a good portion of Dan's career. Dan's early success came just a few years after we had the top defense in the league. As soon as that started dwindling and Sammy "fumble" Smith became our RB, Dan became that GREAT QB on a crappy team.

Archie was going to be my response too.

A big part of any QB's success is the system he is in. No QB can be successful here in this Caretaker system. They treat the position like any other and thats just fundamentally wrong. We need to drop Saprano before I get excited about ANY QB ever again.

Im never going to say that because i dont believe it because its impossible.

You are payton manning but your OL stinks or you dont have a running game you are not going to do well....Its abvious....

But i rather have payton manning first because thats the most important position in a team.........And build around him after that.

And to me the QB position is one of the hardest positions to find.

PS...How many great defensive players weve had JT Zach...madison surtain just to name a few.....And weve also had good offensive talent except a great QB and where has it taken us .............CHyREN............?

NOWHERE..........................!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Time for a change people.

They say defense wins championships....I say so does the offense.

PS. BTW just one more thing....We have good talent on this team. Just not at some key spots........Oh and our coaching stinks...Which is the main reason for our misfortunes....you all know that already.

From Montequi: "Wait...what? Which of your personalities wrote which part of that post?"

Uh...lets see, the first part was written by Fred, he is totally a logical thinker (when compared to my other personalities). The last sentence was from Darrell, he is very emotional and has a short temper.

I say a whole team wins Championships, SamSam. If you are missing even one part, even good punting, you are very unlikely to win an SB.

And the less parts you have, the less likely you are to win one even with the other parts being great.

Now, since we suck at every position except punter and kicker (granted our kicker has missed a few this year but no doubt last year he was great), that makes it LEAST LIKELY that the addition of a quarterback alone in combination with some low round help in other areas is likely to get this team healthy inside of three years.

Archie Manning was not an all-time great, he probably isnt even in the top 25 of all-time QB's. Im talking top 10-15. Those are the true all time greats.

Your argument is totally different than mine.

There is line between the good, great, and the all-time greats. The all-time greats elevated their teams.

Why? Because thats what all-time greats do.

So, again, no all-time great (who by the way..they were all drafted on terrible teams) stayed on a terrible team. Their team got better. Won Superbowls, and if not...were Superbowl contenders.

So, you'd like to think, A & O but your argument is circular. You have set it up so it's "Heads I win, Tails you lose."

If one says "Archie Manning was great," you say "no, because his team was not good."

If one says, just saying for example, "Bob Griese was a very good quarterback but not a great quarterback," you'd say, "Hey, he was a GREAT quarterback because he took his team to three consecutive SuperBowls."

And though Bob Griese is the reason I am a Miami Dolphin fan, there is no way that he was a better QB than Dan Marino but Dan Marino only went to one SuperBowl and one could argue that he did that with David Woodley's team (David started the season as the starting Qcool smiley.

So you have set up your argument to explain away anything that contradicts it.

And this is what makes A&O an all time great at arguing!

Chyren,

No buddy, not at all. I promise you thats not what I am trying to do.

But, on this topic, any NFL pundit would tell you that Archie is not an all-time great.

Who on here believes Archie is an all-time great?

We are seriously having the "let's trade down to get more draft picks" argument here?!?!?!? The draft pick junkies are back out of rehab and headed right down to the corner again. My God give me Luck and a staff that can actually analyze talent and I will be able to build a team around him. Without Luck, who the hell is available. We really want to go after another cast off, or another late round diamond in the rough?? The only way a draft QB pick works with this team is if it is a total slam dunk, and Luck is just that. Look at all the other picks and tell me you really want to give this group MORE picks. I mean they can't analyze QB talent to save their lives...Devlin, White, Beck, etc...etc... etc...

I agree with you Opus, but factually speaking, Devlin was a FA signing, White was a gimmick attempt, and Beck was drafted by the previous regime. Plus I really don't see this regime being around next April.

Chyren,

But my point, is, if we actually do pick near or at the top, then we should have already cleaned house.

Yes, because I close them early for no reason, don't I?

I mean this thread has only been open for 3 years and three months! I might close it down prematurely!
