I don't want Jeff Fisher anywhere near this team. He's another mediocre coach who's never won anything and believes in running the ball and playing defense.
Gruden's problem is that his time in Tampa indicates that he makes stunningly bad personnel decisions. I also don't think he built a particularly good Raiders team... he was just a damn good offensive coach.
I'd like to see him brought in with a competent personnel department to keep him from kicking the tires on bad QBs and bringing in aging scrubs like he did in Tampa.
He's actually my #1 choice if there's some kind of check in place to make sure he doesn't turn into another Nick Saban with the personnel decisions...
Cowher...good motivator, good game manager. Don't think he's a great coach though because he had a lot of talent and his teams were slightly above average most of the time.
Fisher...like him but he's been much like Cowher.
Gruden...never thought he was a great coach. he's firey, passionate, and well liked but he too conservative.
I want an agressive, offensive minded head coach...a go for the throat every minute of the game guy. A disciplined guy that teaches, mentors, encourages, and fosters a no excuses, just win mentality.
I'd take any of the big 3 at this point, if I was Ross I'd offer Cowher a boat load of money to come in this year as a "consultant", that way he can evaluate everyone (players/coaches/Ireland) and he can then clean house as necessary. Maybe he keeps Ireland, Nolan or Daboll, or maybe he takes out the trash.
My only problem with Gruden is, if you think this regime de-values the QB position, you damn sure won't like Grudens style. He treats QBs like ex girlfriends.

McNair made three pro bowls and was pretty inconsistent over his career. He had one exceptional year, and two pretty good seasons. He was exceptionally good in 2003 when he split MVP voting (with manning I think?) but you certainly not a perennial pro bowler. He was downright bad in 2004 after that, admittedly only playing half the season.

I'd take almost anyone over Sparano at this point.

RE: Except that Tampa got worse every year he was there...I don't trust a coach the has that happen when he's supposed to be great.
I'm not saying that he'd be a bad choice...just that he'd have a lot to prove and very, very, time to do it.
Also, all of these guys will want to be coach AND GM...I'm sorry, but that rarely works out. Not many people can do both jobs well at the same time. I'd rather have two quality people over just one, JMO.
That said though, I think we may not have the luxury of doing that anymore.

I know what you mean. I never liked the idea of a coach having complete control. I don't think that works at all on the NFL anymore.

as Montequi said--the other guy, then it becomes a contest of who can make the most "I TOLD you we should have hired (other guy's name) instead" posts.
This will shortly be followed by another contest of who can start the most "let's tank the remaining 15 games of the season so we can draft (most popular college QB's name)" threads.
