If this team ever needed Jim Bates, it's NOW. We need a motivator. I remember when the Heat was going through this early in the season and Spoelstra (who's a Pat Riley protege) took the lead and had a powwow with the team. Everything was good after that and the team ended up exceeding all expectations.

We need a COACH to do that with the team. If it means firing Sparano, then so be it.

Geez. I wish we'd get our heads of out of our asses about Luck. ONE PLAYER isn't going to save this team. Remember, Steve Young and Bret Favre played for different teams before they became great. We need a new coach. We actually have enough talent to make the playoffs (maybe not Superbowl yet...but definitely playoffs), but we're playing worse than a Pop Warner team.

I don't argue you need a QB, but a great QB with crap around him is crap and can ruin that QB's career. I'm also very encouraged by what I've seen from Henne this year. I really feel HE can be our franchise QB. I wonder how many possibly GREAT QBs were wasted on bad teams. Remember David Carr?

Yawn, we will be talking about the dolphins in 2020 saying "geez if we can do this or that we might win". This franchise has gone right into the toilet. I was thinking about it yesterday at work, it's really been "well next year we need to do this and that" and found myself thinking how long I have been saying it, it's been since the early 90's because marino was great but we always needed a few more pieces to be great. Heck, we aren't even close to being even a 90's team. It's just been one long wait and now the team just seems to be one big joke. Elite teams today have 1 thing in common...great coaching, discipline and players who want to win not collect a check and go home. When I watch other teams play there seems to be way more intensity, better catches, better hits...like the Giants game last night. You can just see we are really just a BS team.

Once you have a franchise QB you can then have 10 years worth of draft picks spent on higher success percentage players.

We have invested 5 or 6 2nd round picks on QB.

Jay Fiedler- 2nd
AJ Feeley- 2nd
Culpepper - 2nd
Harrington - 6th
Green - 5th
Beck- 2nd
Henne-2nd

If we had selected Drew Brees ...all of those picks would have been spent on Saftey, LB, OL, DL etc.

The cupboard is bare because our coaches tried to get a good deal on a QB...or we weren't agressive enough in the draft to move up and get what we needed.

But when its only week 2 and the players are already dogging the team/coach, publicly....this ship is sinking...FAST!

I thought Bates did great while he was here. However I don't think he's done very much for any team since he left Miami, more than five years ago.

I believe it's going to take someone else. Maybe Gruden, maybe Cowher.

I'm just saying as a motivator. Bates knew how to fire up a team and make them feel like they could beat anyone. He isn't that great otherwise, so I don't mean we need him as a HC. We just need his fire.

Okay, but has he done that with any of the teams he has been associated since he left Miami what was it, seven seasons ago?

This is a serious question, I haven't kept track of his career since then and have haven't even heard his name spoken except on this message board.

He's gotta be in his mid 60s by now, does he still have it in him?

PF2, I agree that it takes an elite QB to take a franchise to the next level. And I also agree that Andrew Luck will be an elite NFL QB. The one thing I think you are taking for granted is to assume that this front office would select Luck. They have overlooked the QB position since day 1. Hopefully a different front office will be in by place by next April though.

Also interesting to note why you and so many others believed that drafting Henne was a great move, simply because the "trifecta" said so. The same people who are calling for Luck now are the ones who bashed people for disagreeing with the Henne selection.

I think that motivation is the primary reason why Bates was ever successful in the past. His defenses have been vanilla, which means they were fine with good talent but sucked without it. His only saving grace was his ability to motivate his players to play at the highest level game-in and game-out. We just need a LITTLE of that. Just a LITTLE.

I agree and that is (was?) great about Bates.

But the question remains: are there verifiable examples of him doing this LATELY, as in, within the past six or seven football seasons? In his stints elsewhere in the NFL since he left our team, did he motivate any other teams he has coached?

Jim Bates wasn't a great defensive coordinator but, in my opinion, he was a good head coach. He was a better gameday coach than Tony "Wasted Timeouts" Sparano, and he got the players playing their best. What else can you really ask for?

I don't necessarily think that being an offensive or defensive coordinator requires the same skillset as being a head coach, and I think history has proved that repeatedly.

Do you think Miami will ever have a game like the Dolphins/Patriots Monday night game from 2004 under Tony Sparano? Tony Sparano's teams look flat, dejected and overwhelmed in weeks 1-2, when they have EVERYTHING left to play for. Jim Bates electrified that team after the head coach had resigned midseason and they were well out of playoff contention.

I don't care how well he draws up Xs and Os, that's the coordinator's job. Bring in a guy who can get the team ready to go and let the coordinators draw up the plays.

I thought there was a 6th 2nd rounder....In my defense he was a forgettable as a QB.

Really, if I read “Jim Bates” again I'm going to barf.

WTF is up with that?

The dude is OUT OF THE LEAGUE for gods sakes…

Now let's talk about Tom Olivadotti, or that truly special and rare talent genius:

Chuck “Yes I am” Studley. Oh yea. Now he had some serious stank!

Oh, the good ole days…

WTF is your problem? You need to find another pass-time if you find screwing with other people's posts funny.
