I've been head scratching on this one and am coming to the personal opinion that we don not have the right coaching for the job.

1. We have good kicking (punt, kickoff, and FG)
2. We added taslent in that area both last year and this year
3. we have had some pretty decent return people

Results:

1. Terrible coverage of other teams
2. okay, but not spectacular Fin returns
3. Pretty decent distace for kickking (both punt and kickoff)

At this point I have to put it on coaching to have had such repeated weakness in this critical area.

Our special teams hasn't been very "special" since Mike Westhoff was pushed out by Wanny. Our coaching has been suspect ever since.

Horrible play calls. Our coverage unit is coplete crap. Our blocking unit is average at best. I think that our special teams coach is special! lol It's like watching "Jerry's Kids" out there sometimes.

The only upside I've seen is on kickoff (via better competition and not necessarily coaching) - although there may have been some coaching to improve kicking distances.

Coverages and even worse is the lack of tacking discipline makes me nervous every time we kick.

When punting we should be rather looking for a turnover or pinning them down deep ... ala the old Reggie Roby days.

- I really don't sdee the kicking as the problem, but rather the coverage schemes.

- Do any of the coaches among us have any comment on our coverage strategy?

Ginn was the most dominant return man that we've had in years. For me it's a head scratcher as to why he's not out there still doing it. Some here say that he's a bust as a wide receiver. I don't agree with that but I will go along with those that say that Pennington doesn't have the arm to fully take advantage of Ginn's speed. If this is his break-out year as a WR then I can understand not wanting to get him hurt returning kick-offs. Still, I have seen Randy Moss returning punts and what coach would want to see him get hurt?

Gotta be the coaching staff and scheme. No doubt.

Go to nfl.com and look at the punting statistics. Fields average last night was what 30.5! Are you f,ckn kidding me! Thats why they ran it back, the damn ball only took like 2 seconds to get to the return man! Where as Morestead for the saints averaged like 44.7! MAN thats huge! And our kickoffs are not realy sailing into the endzone to often. I want a new punter, and kicker, and puntr if Carpenter cant get it into the endzone 80 percent of the time, and Fields cant get at least a 40 yards average!

Sparano said last week that he is still tinkering with ST's players to see who is going to be on the full time squad.

We are not looking good but hopefully it gets corrected next week when the lineup is set. We improved towards the end of last year and should be even better this year.

I have been wondering about the ST coach too but the inconsistency could just be from mixing and matching personnel. I have to trust that the FO would have fired Bonamego? if they thought he was the problem. They fired the o-line coach is the off season.

Mike Westhoff wouldn't let this happen.
