Pennington's Arm
Posted by: Jonathan Twilley ()

A lot has been said about Pennington's arm strength or lack thereof, but I think last night's game supports Sparano's belief that the arm is strong enough. On the rollout pass to Hartline, he heaved a 50 yard strike while on the run. The pass on which Hartline interfered was also a strong and accurate throw. He had nice zip on some out patterns and another impressive throw to Fasano for the TD that was across his body while scrabbling.

What amazes me is that he is the most accurate passer in the history of the game and he still gets ridiculed for his arm. Go figure.

I agree. I don't think the knock on his arm strength is that he can't throw a deep pass, or even that he can't throw one accurately. It's more-so that he needs a good wind-up to throw a deep pass. Marino could throw for 50 yards accurately without setting his feet and without a significant wind-up..but, that was Marino. Penny isn't Marino, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. If we can shore up the O-Line to a point where we give Penny time, he's capable of leading us to a Superbowl (no doubt). He breaks down when he doesn't have any time, which is what happened in our playoff game last year.

I've said this before. The key to our offense is our line. The WRs, RBs, and QB will take care of themselves. We have plenty of talent there to go deep into the playoffs.

Pennington could throw a 50 yard bomb! the problem is the floats there fo so long that it could get picked off because he doesnt have enough strength to get the ball 50 yards deep in a hurry

The guy threw 7 interceptions last year. I know...I know...he threw 4 against in the playoffs, but that was a bad game against the best defense in the NFL. Overall, he doesn't have a problem with interceptions so don't support your argument with that.

I think where it shows up most is in our running game. Teams constantly load up 8, 9, even 10 defenders in the box to defend the run because they don't respect Pennington's ability to beat them deep.

You're basically saying he throws a duck. That's not true, and has nothing to do with arm strength. It's technique. If you can throw 50 yards, you can throw a duck OR a good pass. It's just the arc you use.

Penny hasn't really had the benefit of a good O-Line during his entire career. Some guys, like Marino and Favre, could throw a deep ball even while being rushed. Other guys, like Penny, need to pull back and take a longer throwing motion to get it that deep. In fact, Byron Leftwich (the guy who looked so good against us) has the same problem, but he's not nearly as accurate as Penny!

I dont think its a matter of a floating ball, is that is what he is accustomed to, in his mechanics. He doesnt have the elite arm strength of Jamarcus or Cutler, but i think last night showed he has enough UMPH to air it out, which makes me waunder about Ginn just not running the right reads? I mean he hit for stride Hartline? I'm realy starting not to like Ginn.

Me too. It's been a while since we had a QB that could hit a receiver in stride. Penny did it. Why isn't Ginn the one on the other end?!

Because Ginn is mentally challenged, and Just runs to theoutside, instead of taking a hit, he is a pussy and cant take any damage mentally.

the arm is fine at home or playing in warm weather or domes.

Put him in Buffalo, NE, or NY in DECEMBER and its a different story!!

What? Pennington's worst games last year where Week 1, 2, 12 and the playoff game. All 4 of those games were in warm weather (3 in Miami, one in Phoenix)!! We won AT KC in below freezing weather. He also played pretty well in NY as a Jet!

Wat!? Did you see the long bomb he tried to throw to ginn in that game and he got picked off? the ball was just floating in the air, Did you see the pass yesterday to bess where bess caught it one handed out of bounds!? what did the commentator say!? looks like the ball just floated on pennington and gave enough time for the cb to catch up!! it proves my point, he can throw it deep but the ball just floats on him, He is a good qb but just throwing long bombs isnt part of his game!

Are you implying that Thunder is the pot and Ginn is black?

Am I wrong or did Pennington throw good deap balls to L. Coles back in the day? It seems he did, but I could be wrong. Nonetheless, Pennington and Sparano seem to the his arm is good so that considered and based on what I saw, I will take their word for it. I am not claiming he has a cannon, but considering he can make all the throws and is the most accurate passer in history, I am not going to complain. If there is a problem with are passing game, don't blame it on Chad's arm.

Is it really? I think pure intelligence is most often what separates good athletes from the superstars. I believe it's the same issue with Jason Allen.

I wasn't talking about your comment Monte. I was talking about the guys who said Ginn can't take a hit.
