Last year we struggled to find the right combination up until the last 4 or 5 games of the season where we really improved our coverage units.
Punt returner...
Davone Bess: Averaged 11 ypr, longest was 27 yards. Sure handed but lacks explosion and ability to make people miss.
Ted Ginn: Averaged 7.7 ypr. longest 15 yards. long strider and struggled with catching punts. Not much MPM ability.
Kick returner...
Ted Ginn: 32/657 yards. 20.5 avg. longest 41 yards Did a good job but blocking was questionable. Eventually stopped returning kicks as job was handed over to committee as he concentrated on WR.
Davone Bess: 14/311 yards. 22.2 avg. serviceable but not as explosive as Ginn. Not much threat to go the distance.
Pat Cobbs: 8/189 23.6 avg. longest 60 yards. Had a couple of good runs and of course the 60 yarder. Looked better than Bess but not as good as Ginn.
Brandon London: 2/28, 17 long. 14 avg...
I like Ginn as a KR but not PR. He is a threat but coached seem to want him to concentrate on WR.
IMO, we need a new KR and PR. This is a position that we really have no threat other than Ginn at KR but he may not do that this year.
I was wondering what Chris Clemons or Anthony Armstrong could do. Armstrong has the speed and is quicker (not faster) than Ginn. He had a 100 yard KR in college (West Texas A&M).
Clemons returned kicks in HS and was a RB.
I also wonder about Hartline returning punts. He has 4.4 speed and returned punts at OSU.
Hartline as PR and Armstrong as the KR may provide a nice spark on ST's.
