Our entire defensive approach - at least as I've understood it over the previous few seasons - starts with secondary play, and specifically CB who can play tight man the vast majority of the time.
I think our starting 5 DBs that were envisioned were: X, Byron Jones, Holland, Brandon Jones and Nik Needham. 3 of those guys lost for the season (losing hope Byron makes it back), X playing but with some injury concerns. No way to expect that the D wouldn't be significantly impacted by those losses.
However, my impression has been that there hasn't been much adjustment or stepping up by others to compensate. We need our pass rush to get there in spite of diminished coverage on the back end. We need to do a much better job of containing running QBs. Our tackling has to be better by leaps and bounds. I'm not saying we can reach our full potential as if everyone were healthy...I'm just saying that I believe it's possible for us to play quite a bit better on D with the players we have than what we're seeing.
