TC, I think the D is confused and getting poor info from the sidelines with defensive schemes to run on a given play. Van Ginkle may be a victim of this confusion.
When everyone in the &*^%$ stadium knows there is going to be a certain play and the guys on the field see substitutes that don't jive well with what should be on the field, coverage goes out the window. This is simply a hypothesis, nothing more, since I can't review game film and compare what existed last year and what the hell is going on today.
It's just like the offensive 4th and 1 play that failed. Hike in shotgun formation and handoff to Brown that is stopped. Everyone in the *&&^% stadium knew it was a run, yet the play called and approach to it was asinine.
Bottom line is I don't know. (And the coaches don't know either apparently).
