We have often figured we could wait and get the QB we wanted later so we drafted Jamar Fletcher at the end of the first round and Drew Brees got drafted a few picks later. Al's strategy would not have been so bad for us in 2001.

Are you interpreting Hoo correctly, Joe? I think the contrast between "Beasts" and "Good players" is the same dichotomy I am setting up between "good role players" and drafting someone the pundits are saying is a "monster talent."
1 Apple, Cravens or William Jackson DB
2 Germain Ifredi, Jason Spriggs, OL
3 Devonte Booker, Daniel Lasco RB
4 Sebastian Tretola, Vadal Alexander Denver Kirkland OL
5 Kevin Hogan QB
6 Stephen Weatherly, Nick Vigil, Dominique Alexander Reggie Northrup LB
7 Charone Peake Tyler Boyd, Devon Cajuste WR
7 tryrone Holmes, Anthony Settel ,James Cowser Jimmy Bean DE
I am certainly NOT a draft maven -- but the kid Shaq Lawson really stands out to me in terms of having a pro package -- notably he's a quality kid with smarts and I believe fully capable of translating his game to the NFL right away.
I don't believe he's the athlete OV is -- but he will be very solid in the NFL. And BTW, losing OV was a shameful titanic blunder our part not -- not because we didn't pay zillions like NY but because we didn't get him signed to a new contact well before FA!
Same with Miller.
I get the fact Lawson will most likely be gone -- and if he is -- I think we need to go BPA regardless of position because this team needs premium talent regardless of position.
IMO, to be worthy of #13 or higher, a DE should be a twitchy, high motor, technician. Lawson has about 1 of 3 of those traits. I would view him as a late 1 to mid 2 type of rusher. He seems more of a strong side run stopper than a guy who is going to ever lead the league in pressures or sacks by beating NFL left tackles. He may also need shoulder surgery before the season.
Kevin Dodd is a 24 year old rookie with prototypical size, one year of experience and may need a few years to turn into a starting strong side DE. Is he really worth a 1st?
In the end, they may both be good overall DE's but how much do you invest on guys who may take two or 3 years to show any real production? For me, that wouldn't be the 13th pick. A player that high should be starting and producing day 1.
What are the odds either one beats out Andre Branch? Another former Clemson DE.
Leonard Floyd is the only quick twitch 1st round talent I see but he lacks girth and production in college. I know he dropped in coverage about as much as he rushed the passer so teams will need to decide if he is Barkevious Mingo or Justin Houston. Can he play a Von Miller type of role like he did at SLB in a 4-3 under defense prior to Wade Phillips 3-4?
It appears this regime has gone back to a certain prototype system ala Parcels.
All the linebackers they are looking at are at least 6'1 & run a sub 4.7 40.
The RB's are in the 220 lbs area and have pass catching skills as well as pass blocking.
The corners are in the 6 ft range and run a sub 4.5 40, have zone skills as well as the ability to press and jam at the line. Physical zone corners.
The good news is the rookie guards they are looking at are no longer these finesse type dancing bears at 310 lbs who get run over (cough, cough Dallas), they are big bodied maulers at 330.
Dallas Thomas 306
Jamil Douglas 304
Billy Turner 315
New guys:
Kraig Urbik 325
McClendon (re-signed) 325
Sam Young 332 (tackle)
I would bet even the holdovers are being told to gain some weight this off season.

I agree Joe. That experiment with drafting athletic guards to run the ZBS has failed; It has failed to provide pass protection, but it has worked in the ZBS. In other words they acquired guards for the run game in a system that passed the ball 60/40. Failed.

And...... We should draft a WR and QB with out first 2 picks?

That's right, because I decided that, and It is my preference!

of course it is your preference, that kind of goes without saying..you are stating the obvious....
The reason I ask is why a WR at 13? First It is a position of strength for us. Second we drafted WR in RD 1 last year. Third Doctson I have not seen rated higher then what 25, but you want to take him at 13. And fourth he is injured according to most draft boards... I am curious why you think he is the best player available at 13?
Next why Connor Cook in the 2nd rd? I understand the question surrounding Tannehill after last year, but why is Cook the guy?
Finally we had one of the worst defense's in the league last year, we let go of our best cb. Our LB's were horrible last year. Our biggest weakness on offense last year was the oline. We lost our number 1 rb to free agency. But somehow you ignore all of that and draft a WR and Qb with our first 2 picks, both way above where they are ranked.
I am just curious where this logic is coming from, maybe I am completely missing something that you could enlighten me?
