Could be, but Nickle Defenses get played what...65% of the time?
I've never been counting on Moreno to be anything more than a 3rd down back.
If he gives us good blitz pick up and an outlet receiver in obvious passing situations then he's a worthwhile investment in my eyes.
Still, that's an additional 25% that not many, if any other RB's had vs softer defenses.
But you are right, he will help in pass pro and as a receiver on 3rd down....unless the line really is much better and Miller capitalizes on the opportunity.
Miller was targeted 30 times last year and hauled in 26 passes in the vanilla Sherman offense.
Moreno was targeted 72 times and caught 60 passes for 548/3.
3rd year could be a charm for Miller. Motivated, new offense, better line....He was not as bad in pass pro as most people would have you believe. He gave up 2 sacks and something like 7 total pressures.
I guess my point was that it's just another "red flag" for Moreno. You show up overweight and end up running 3rd team, there's a good chance your snaps will be limited in real camp and a real chance you "fall out of favor" with Philbin.
Now on the other side of the coin, you have a younger player, who is not thrilled that a "starter" was brought in and now he's more motivated to keep his job. From his perspective, he is suffering the consequences for a bad rushing game when in fact it's more likely the fault of a terrible line. He showed up in shape.
He also sees a guy getting paid more in one year that he will make in 4 years. (3m for 1 year compared to 2.6m for 4 years)
Miller will make 650k this year and has to be wanted that extension for the real money.
Say that plays out...and now you're highest paid RB is 2nd or 3rd string??? So we ended up paying 3 mil (only 1.25 guaranteed) for, what ended up being, a motivational tool (pun intended).

Grrrrrrrr! Id Ronnie Brown still available? better then nothing. We should have learned a serious lesson last year going into the season with no backups........
Well, in all fairness, it is just arthroscopic surgery if he needs it. I would pass on Ronnie. 32 years old, 45 carries for 157 yards last year, many injuries, about 500 yards over last 3 years. It may be time to retire.
I'm not against bringing in veteran (over 30) players. Just not at RB.
The good part is that we can get the younger guys more carries. I am curious to take a look at Orleans Darkwa (what a name!) and Damien Williams.
