Football Question

Auburn vs. TAM, just concluded..

TAM behind by 4 points. About 20 seconds left, 4th down, Manziel goes back to pass, spirals back further and further and is sacked with 11 seconds left on the clock.

The Auburn players start celebrating on the field.

The ref throws a flag, excessive celebration.

BUT THERE IS NO FIRST DOWN FOR THE Aggies.

The announcers say it is a dead ball foul, no mark off of yardage, no nothing as I can see, Auburn takes over at the spot of the sack.

Is this a college football only application?

Would it apply in the pros as well?

Wish DolfanMark was here.

IF it was 4th down and the play was a dead ball foul I agree 100% that it should not have been first down for A&M. At the point of the infraction the 4th down play was over and it was 'already' Auburn's ball, first down Auburn.

BUT the ball should have been moved the requisite number of yards to mark off the penalty (not that it mattered with 11 seconds left, but still).

You know JC, I am ashamed that being a lawyer I was unclear.

There were 11 seconds when that last play went off but the clock ran out by the time of the unsportsmanlike call because it was after the sack and while the QB was lying on the ground.

How would that have affected your analysis?

I kept saying don't they get one more untimed play?

Oh so there was a clock issue, but still I think if it's a dead ball foul after an unsuccessful fourth down play, no additional play gets run, because the offending team (Auburn) was no longer on "defense" after the play was over. There would be another play awarded to the offense in the event of a penalty on the defense, but Auburn technically was no longer on Defense after the whistle blew on that 4th down play.

Granted, my opinion above is hindered by my horridly limited knowledge of NCAA rules *and* the fact that I didn't even see that game
spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

Okay, so bottom line, game over, no extra play?

Right, in my opinion no extra play.
