We had this discussion a couple of years ago whether it made more sense to build a line first or to get the franchise QB and build around him.
Both sides of the argument had merit but, here we are.
Without decent O-line play Tannehill may well get hurt and we may never know for sure if he is anything other than average.
He's shown flashes but, at first so did Henne.
So many posters here were convinced that all we needed to do was surround him with "weapons", we did and again, here we are.
Why the o-line was so neglected in the off-season needs to be explained by the coaches and Ireland.

But Hooligan, what I have been fighting with the people on this board for the last few weeks is that Tanny is only good when he is running some form of an option where he can use his athleticism to his advantage.

When he is in the pocket, even his face looks like a deer in the headlights.

As many have pointed out today, he has no pocket presence. He does not know how to avoid the sack or when to simply throw the ball away. I guess he has worked on and cured his habit of holding the ball low while he is in the pocket because there were no tomahawk chop fumbles like the last two games but that's the only improvement I saw.

I think the reason that he is REGRESSING (getting worse) this year is that last year they allowed him to be a little bit more like the Texas A & M QB he was but this year they are INSISTING that he convert himself to a traditional NFL pocket passing QB.

So who would you blame, him or the coaches?

I think that may be an overstatement.

I agree there were some times when the sack was immediate but on more occasions than that, I saw him with enough time to at least get rid of the ball.

You get the QB first.

You get the best player available at a position of need.

If you've got the chance to draft a great QB OR a great lineman, THEN you go for the great QB.

but if it's a weak QB year, you are better off getting a defensive SACKING MACHINE or a great offensive lineman or a great receiver or runner.

You just can't deal in absolutes!

In the last 9 years we have spent fully a THIRD (3 of 9 INCLUDING a #1 overall) of our 1st round draft picks on Offensive Linemen. In that time we are 61-88 (40% win pct) and have only made the playoffs ONE year and have only been ranked in the top HALF of the NFL in offense ONE year. Interestingly, those years were the same year and the ONLY year we had A SERVICEABLE NFL QB. That year was 2008, the year Pennington managed to stay healthy. I'm not sure what needs to be done about the OL, but I do know this...THROWING AWAY DRAFT PICKS ON IT WON'T HELP.

Tannehill needs to learn how to scramble in the pocket and buy time...The OL is terrible but he makes it even worse than it is.

He is sitting there just waiting to be sacked.

He doesnt have any type of pocket awareness whatsoever.

Hey guys,

Since this is the "live game thread" what do y'all think about going forward with discussions on separate topics.

There are some great points here, how to use future draft picks, etc., that have nothing to do with the live game. I'd hate for that good info to be buried in longassed thread whose title is Live Game thread.

He's a good quarterback, SamSam. He's just not meant to be a "pocket" quarterback.

Then teach him how to move in the pocket.....scramble and throw on the run.

if that's possible they should do it but that's on the coaches too.

But if they can't because it's not in his nature, that's okay. But to let him go when he would make a fantastic QB like Russell Wilson, Colin Kaepernick, or RGIII would be a shame.

I'd hate to see Tanny released and then lead some other team to glory.

It's not his fault.

He threw on the run very well on this game a couple of times.

Throwing on the run and that means out of the pocket.

No. I was being frustrated. I saw that "deer in the headlights" look in his eyes.
