Omar Kelly's column today is an interesting idea, but I have a feeling that he doesn't mean what I mean- he LOVES Tua. Kelly's column:
(deleted so that this post can be read as originally written, though without the link- Kelly's column is all over the internet locally anyway.)
My idea- let's move back from 5, get another 1st in next year's draft and use this year's draft to do what we should have done last year: build up our lines and work on upgrading the support positions. Since college football doesn't train linemen in the skills needed to succeed at the next level anymore, it takes longer for O-lineman to develop in the NFL now. We can draft a QB in the later rounds, if we can find one with better upside than Rosen, but the better quality lineman that we can get with our myriad picks this year will help keep Fitz alive and effective for another year and they'll be ready to keep the rookie upright and effective next year. Then, with the three first rounders we'll have next year we'll have a shot at getting a truly exceptional QB from anywhere on the board- preferably, Trevor Lawrence. At that time, he will have more starting experience than either of the guys this year- the one-year-wonder or the injury-prone(in college yet!) one-year+ kid.
Bold, and maybe difficult, but possible? I'd be interested in hearing your opinions on this matter. Even Omar Kelly's. so- what do you think? Is this reasonable?

Imagine that? Could be the greatest haul since the 1990 Cowboys........
I honestly haven't landed on a specific position regarding how I think they ought to use their 1st pick in this year's draft. Your reference of the 1990 Cowboys brings a couple of thoughts to mind, though.
1. it was preceded in 1989 by the selection of both Aikman #1 overall and Walsh in the supplemental draft (which cost them the #1 overall pick in 1990). They clearly valued the QB position when they had the pick of the litter, and 4 of the top 5 players in that draft ended up in the HoF, so I'm guessing there was lively debate about which future HoF talent would most benefit the Cowboys.
2. the Herschel Walker trade that brought the treasure-trove of high draft picks in 1990, 1991 & 1992 was orchestrated by Jimmy Johnson who clearly had a strategy in mind for building a team that would compete consistently for SB rings for years to come. (Crazy side-notes: they actually ended up with the least # of picks in 1990 due to further trading of picks. And, had they not picked Walsh in the supplemental, they may have been tempted to pick Blair Thomas who went #2 overall instead of Emmitt Smith. Anywho, back to the point at hand...)
This, to me, is more important than the first point and ties to the Phins in this way (at least for me): for the first time since JJ was running the Phins in the late 90's, I think we have a head coach that truly has a good vision for how to construct a team that will compete consistently for years. Since Wanny took over, I've consistently felt like our coaching & GM staff tend to get less out of players' potential than they should, in large part because they simply don't seem to have a real viable vision as "true north" that everything can be built toward.
When Flores led us to 5-11 last year, it was, to me, mind-boggling that we could perform so well given all the factors (no need to list out) that had most prognosticators (even informed, insider local reporters) predicting 0-16. Even the most proven talented players they kept (Howard & Jones) didn't really contribute on the field.
It's even encouraging to me that Johnson did as well as he did with the Cowboys even as he made big mistakes (trading up to #1 overall in 1991 to pick Russell Maryland who was a good player but likely not worth the cost of trading up). It gives me more confidence than I've had in 20 years that doing something bold - whether it's picking a player or passing over a player - is couched within a viable winning strategy.

Well said, Tamper. And I won't be surprised if they're taking players no one is familiar with or hasn't been mentioned in the million mock drafts out there.
They're looking for specific players, much like belichick, and will piss people off with some of their picks. They are going to miss on some picks. Everyone does but I'll trust the process based on the fact that he got a bunch of UPS drivers to play hard and win 5 games last year they had no business winning.
Look at you graduating from SamSam to now speaking for Dolphans 4545
But I'll dumb it down for you. decades before me the forum ran just a little differently not on outdated programs. WELCOME TO 2020, meaning like you its more then a bit old in the tooth. And doesn't perform well anymore.
When you welcome somebody to some place, you are saying, at the very least, that you have been there longer than them.
Rick (dolphan4545) was posting here long before you even joined the forum and started posting.
Now just because he hasn't posted as recently and regularly as you, that doesn't mean it is proper for you to welcome him as a newly arrived stranger joining in posting on the forum.
But it doesn't make any difference. I'm sure he appreciates the intention.

I'm all for building a team for a young QB to succeed with even if it means waiting until next year to draft one. Both Fitz and Rosen will be FA's next year, they can have at it with drafting a QB then.

It's an option for sure. But let's not pick a guy for the sake of picking a guy. If they pick a QB anywhere in the 1st round I expect that dude to be starting sooner then later.
It would just be nice to give him a semblance of positive experiences. A decent Defense.Aline to give him time to make plays.not destroy his confidence like Rosen.

I agree. This team has a lot of needs. I'd hate to see this team sell the house and barn to move up. We need all of our picks IMO.
BTW...Reshad Jones was released by the Phins today.
I agree, we have too many needs just now to go trading them away. Yes, a true franchise QB is really worth as much draft capital as is necessary to get him, but not THIS year! Besides, I'm greedy. I WANT Trevor Lawrence, and I think that whatever we have to give up for him next year will be worth it. Give him the talent we developed last year (to everybody's surprise!) and AT LEAST the draft choices we'll bring in this year (and maybe a few that we don't have yet) to support him, we'll have a damn good team for the foreseeable future.
I WANT a third HOF QB!
