Philbin has repeatedly made it clear that this team needs playmakers; and he is right.
So far this offseason, we have added 3 playmakers on defense (Ellerbe, Wheeler and Grimm). We lost 3 solid players (Dansby, Burnett and Smith), but I am not sure any one of them could be considered a playmaker. When healthy, I would consider all three of the new guys to be playmakers.
On offense, we have lost a playmaker (Bush) and added a playmaker (Wallace). We have also added two solid players (Keller and Gibson).
Having said all this, I believe that our need for offensive playmakers will still be considered the top priority. That said, assuming he is available, I expect the Phins to take Tavon Austin with the 12th pick. His Percy Harvin/Randall Cobb skillset would immediately create mismatches and open up our offense. The guy is a playmaker.
I don't believe that signing a straight-ahead speed WR like Wallace will prevent us from drafting Austin.
I think we took a fast guy that could return punts, and kickoffs a few years ago anybody remember Ted I'm scared so let me run out of bounds Ginn? I say he is too small to be an effective pro player, and surely not at #12. I am not saying he wasn't a good college player he was, but this kid will get killed if a team tries to build their offense around him. Too small, and this league will examples out of small players who try to play bigger than who they are.
We have invested money at WR...I think that position is set as far as high investments....maybe a 3rd rounder.
We have invested at Guard, LB, DT.
I see us drafting a pass rusher, a corner,or tackle. If we sign Winston...we draft D with the first over-all.
I would not be surprised to see us trade down...aside from 1 or 2 guys who might slip ( Dee Milner ??) the BPA at 12 might not be that much better than 4 or 5 guys still on the board...so trading down 4 or 5 spots would be valid.
There is a lot of depth in draft ...but the waters are pretty muddy about who is better than who. Austin, Allen, Patterson? Mingo, Rhodes, Jones, Eifert? I would be just as happy with one of them at 17 as I would at 12.
If we stand pat and landed one for each of these picks, the FA additions stay healthy & are productive, this team could be scary if Tannehill matures into an Aikman Romo type QB that can hit the open receivers. I would add Bryant McKinnie to play LT for a year or two while Martin or the draft pick mentor under him. Can Winston play LT?

7b> Anthony CB CAL

J & J at T & G finally solidifies our oline.
IS Cyprien the S we have not seen since Blackwood and Oliver, I gotta find out?.
Kelcie is the best blocking TE in the draft.
If you have not seen clips of Dobson do so.
Bass knows how to get to the qb.
I was against honey badger but getting him in the 5th is irrestible. Will be tempted to grab him in the 4th.
I always noticed Thomas when I watched Stanford play. Like Jones from AL he is a guy I want on my team.
Johnson, Anthony and Morris are talented. I think they will be available in the 7th, pushed down by the number of rbs and cbs in this draft.

blackwood and oliver? you kidding? those guys were the symbols of all that was wrong with the defense when we had none in the marino years. you really think those are the best 2 we've had since?

I don't know how old you are but I remember Oliver being one of the few right things on a Shula defense and having a league wide reputation as one of the hardest hitting safeties in the league. Blackwood was not an all pro but again he was more part of the solution than a part of the problem and he too was smart and a hard hitter. Do we have those elements at safety right now?
Maybe I am just getting old but you always sound if you are talking from a bent position with your head in some unnatural place.
Louis Oliver had 21 interceptions in his first 5 years with the Phins before he went to the Bengals. He also took guys head off, IMO He surely wasnt a symbol of what was wrong with SHulas defense... Maybe guys like JB Brown and Vestee Jackson and especially our D-cordinator Olivadotti, were symmbols but not Oliver...

The real exciting idea to me of who we draft would be if we trade one of our 2nd rd pick for Brandon Albert just before the draft opens. I am not saying I want to do that, but just how interesting that move would make our 1st rd selection..
Then all bets are off as to who we might draft.... It would truly be BPA...

Don't forget we also resigned Brian Hartline for big $$$. 3 big name receivers? I don't see it. Irlend is a sure better when it comes to 1st rounders. He might even trade down if the price is right.

Albert got Franchised this year.
His cap number this season is $9.83 and He'll want an extension for a few more years in that neighbor hood.
I don't think we are trading for Albert unless the asking price comes down and he takes a contract for less than Jake Long got from St Louis.
If KC plan on taking Joekel, they are going to try and move Albert.. If we are going to have to trade a 2nd or third to move up and take Fisher or Johnson... It is in the realm of possibility we would trade for Albert instead of trading up. We were interested in paying Long pretty well.. So I wouldn't rule out that we would be willing to pay a franchised LT like Albert.. Not sure it will happen but still think it is possible depending on how much they value Johnson or Fisher vs Albert... And how much they might value using that pick in someone else besides a Tackle...

Philbin comes from GB where up until this year, their receivers were:
Greg Jennings
Jordy Nelson
James Jones
Randall Cobb
JerMichael Finley
That group is far better and deeper than ours. The top 4 guys are home-run threats each time they touch the ball. We have one legitimate home-run threat. You may not want a WR in round 1, which is fine, but I still suspect Austin is the guy if he is there at 12.

I do believe we will draft another speedy receiver in the first 4 rounds. But, I don't think it will be Austin. That's an awfully high draft spot for a 5'8, 174-lb player. Yes, I know how explosive he is. But, look at Green Bay's WRs. Philbin has said they want interchangeable WRs. Green Bay's smallest WR is Cobb, at 5'10, 192. I just don't see it happening with Austin for us in the first round. I think it's more likely someone from the Deandre Hopkins, Markus Wheaton, Quinton Patton, Stedman Bailey, Ryan Swope group.
Steve Smith (Carolina)
Randall Cobb
Drew Brees
Russell Wilson
Wes Welker
Great talent is great talent, even if you are a bit smaller than the ideal. In addition to these guys, there have been many small RBs that have thrived, and continue to thrive, in the NFL.
Anyone remember how big Duper and Clayton were?
Duper: 5-9, 185
Clayton: 5-9, 177
And you can touch WRs less now than you could then, so it is becoming easier for the smaller guys to get separation.
Everyone would love to have a Calvin Johnson or an AJ Green, but you don't have to be 6-4 to be a great WR. Also watching Austin on film, he seems more like Steve Smith than Tedd Ginn. Would anyone mind getting a player of Steve Smith's caliber in round 1 this year? Personally, I would be thrilled.

Welker and Cobb outweigh Austin by 15 lbs and are thicker built.
Steve Smith is 5'9 185 and is about the closest to Austin in size from the players you mentioned. He is also injured a lot. So is DeSean Jackson but the is 6 ft tall.
It's not only about being small because of fear of injury. Its about what he can do. The question is can he play outside....
Weaknesses: Limited to the slot on most plays; lacks the size and strength most scouts prefer outside, or even as a kick returner. NFL.com
I also question why Austin hasn't been in the gym to put on much needed weight. 174 lbs? He has the frame to put on 10-15 more but hasn't done it. Why? is he dedicated?

True, Clayton was slight of build, but I don't believe he was lining up in the slot and taking all those hits over the middle.
