Brandon Fields has been cut. Wow.

Barry Jackson ?@flasportsbuzz 2m2 minutes ago
As we mentioned two weeks ago, Dolphins really like Darr, view him as potential longterm NFL punter. Move saves $2 M in salary for this yr.

Greg Likens ?@GregLikens 3m3 minutes ago
Undrafted rookie Matt Darr from Tennessee is the #Dolphins new punter

Couldn't they try and trade him and get something in return?

Wouldn't be surprised if Sturgis is next

And I would guess they tried trading him with no luck

Just add another 1.5 million to our league leading dead money.... With only $980,000 in cap savings.... I really dont like the fact that Tannebaum has us leading the league in dead money... $23.5 million in one year... I understand the changing of the guard but that is a bit ridiculous....

Mike Wallace $6,600,000
Dannell Ellerbe $6,400,000
Brian Hartline $4,200,000
Philip Wheeler $1,400,000
Cortland Finnegan $1,000,000
Brandon Gibson $1,000,000
Randy Starks $1,000,000
J.D. Walton $275,000
Shelley Smith $250,000
Nate Garner $166,668
Michael Egnew $147,239

I don't see any of these that we should have kept. I have to blame that one on Ireland for spending too big for unproven, questionable players. He was playing fantasy football except he paid top dollar for 3rd tier players that didn't for the system.

The top 2 players on that list are the majority of the problem. They both NEEDED to go, IMO.

They all had significant dead money but also gave us big savings to be able to add players like Suh.

The dead money drops to around 3 million for 2016.

Brandon Fields also had a 3.5m salary / 4.3 million cap hit for 2016. Once Dion Jordan is cut we actually might end up under the 2016 cap for next year.

I called for this move at the beginning of pre-season. Fields does not get the distance and more importantly the hang time he did since he made the Pro Bowl in 2013

He used to be a field position weapon but was now becoming a liability

Omar is being his usual dick self about this move. Completely freaking out that the team cares more about 800k than winning. He also chooses to ignore these facts....

Fields is 31 years old.

He was due 1.7 mil this year with a 2.5 mil cap hit.

He was due 3.5 mil next year with a 4.5 mil cap hit.

He would most certainly have had to be cut next year and had we kept him, we would be sacrificing our future kicker to do it. There were no guarantees that we could actually find a guy with a big leg that would have been better next year.

We did have a punter with a top 5 salary. He would have been the highest paid punter in 2016, when we need cap space the most.

Now we have a punter who does not even count against the top 51 contracts or salary cap and had exactly $1000 in guaranteed money.

Some people seem to forget how bad Fields sucked for the first half of the season. Shanking punts at crucial moments in the game, etc. He was injured for a bit I believe but seemed to turn it around until weeks 15 & 16 when he started shanking again.

As a rookie, he had 4 games where he averaged under 40 yards per punt.

Year 2: 4 games
year 3: 1 game
year 4: 1 game (1 punt)
year 5: 0 games
year 6: 0 games
year 7: 0 games
year 8: 4 games

See the trend here?

Was he going to start getting better or regressing at age 32? It was a calculated gamble but to imply it was ALL about money is not accurate. Darr DID beat out Fields this off season with a higher average punt.

Look for some long FG attempts this week to decide between our two kickers.
