This dude is going to be a stud. If you were paying attention he had 3 PI calls against him that assisted in drives plus had 3-4 catches. He was abusing his defender all day.
Many WR take 2-3 years to become beast in the NFL. AJ Green is a rare form. Look at pretty much all of the Giants WR, they all developed later in their career. The Cowyboys WR too.

He impressed me with his hands, and ability to hang on to the ball after a good hit. But, like every receiver we have had since Chris Chambers, he needs to get more separation from defenders.

Mark i dont know if you saw waht i saw...But at least 5 times that i saw him run right into the coverage...
WR's usually take a few years to blossom, Mathews is the type of player that could bust out in the next two years. I'm not saying he will, but it's not unprecedented.

I wish him the best but its frustrating as hell watching him run right into defenders over and over.
I like Mathews and think he has a lot of potential, he is a big target or plays big and has strength to fight for yards... He is pretty shifty and good hands... He was pretty elusive and dynamic as a returner for Nevada.. Seems to me his weaknesses are improving.. Still has a way to go... For a 7th rd pick he seems to have a legit shot at becoming something for us... And I agree most rookie WR do very little and fight to get on the field..

I haven't even posted on this subject.
But thanks for the "CryinB" that will let me search and discover which former poster you "used to be."

As opposed to QB's who always make the Pro Bowl in their rookie year.
You want to annoint Mathews after 8 catches but give no slack to a rookie QB with 19 college starts....and we are clueless???
Matthews is a great athlete. My nephew was a high school classmate in O.C. and he was a multi-sport two way do everything player.
I think I heard he had a scholarship to Oregon and didn't qualify academically. Dad was in the military also.
A hard working kid to root for. If he doesn't make it at WR he probably can play corner better than some of our guys! Had like 10 picks one year
Richard Sherman of Seattle was converted from WR to DB by Jim Harbaugh I beleive. if we only had taken Sherman and Kam Chancellor instead of Smith .
The "Legion of Boom" are the real deal, best secondary in the NFL, other than earl Thomas all drafted 5th round or later! Browner a probowler went undrafted! Chancellor has lit up guys like Vernon Davis
We need to spy on Carrol's scouting , he has hit at a really high rate in late round picks with his DB's Wilson, Bobby Wagner.

Gil Brandt loved Matthews in the draft. He called him a 2nd round talent who would go much lower. Matthew was still rehabbing an injury at the combine, and only ran a 4.58, and he slipped under the radar. Brandt said that only about 8 teams were at his pro day, but that Matthews lit it up, including a 4.46 40.
I don't think speed is Hartline's problem. He can't consistently get open/separation in crunch time. I really like him and think he can do more than what he did this year, but not enough to be the guy. But I don't think track speed is what's holding him up. Honestly one thing I noticed about him as I watched him in the latter parts of this season is that he seems to fall down pretty easily when he's trying to make a move after catching the ball.
