I was watching some of the draft history shows on NFL network late last night and they were interviewing Jimmy Johnson. Jimmy said he didn't believe in BPA, he said he created a value chart of where guys fit. And then he picked the specific players he wanted, and then just went and got them... If the player he wanted was to high to draft with the pick he had, he would just trade back until it made more sense but still got the guy he wanted... He said he never did best player available ever, he only targeted specific players.. Value didn't mean very much it was about getting the players he wanted on his team...
Thought it was interesting considering what a drafting genius Johnson was, and that he didnt follow what is the standard for most GMs in todays NFL...

No doubt, he was better at evaluating defensive players then offensive it seems...While Aikman fell into his lap more or less, he does get some credit for drafting offensive player Emmitt Smith at 17 in my book....
Still caught me by surprise to hear him say he was against BPA...

at least he traded back instead of reached. so he did care somewhat about BPA b/c if he didn't he would have taken whoever he wanted whenever he was available and not cared that he was not worth of that spot.
that said he traded back way too much with us and we ended up with crap more often than not. i.e., john avery, jj johnson, rob konrad

Rob Konrad wasn't crap. He was not utilized correctly. You can't draft a pass catching FB and then expect him to be nothing more than a blocker. The coaches wasted what he did the best.
But yes, JJ tried to out think everyone far too often with his manuvering...on offense, all he did was out think himself.
