Just read where the Bills may have an interest in Clay.

Too bad Miami can't sign him to a contract then trade him to the Bills.

That's a great idea. Then we depend on Phillip Wheeler to cover him.

Actually, 6 mil a year would rank him #10 for average salaries for TE's.

1 Jimmy Graham $10,000,000
2 Rob Gronkowski $9,000,000
3 Jason Witten $7,400,000
4 Vernon Davis $7,350,000
5 Kyle Rudolph $7,300,000
6 Antonio Gates $7,235,000
7 Jared Cook $7,020,000
8 Marcedes Lewis $6,800,000
9 Dennis Pitta $6,400,000
10 Martellus Bennett $5,100,000
11 Brent Celek $4,875,000
12 Greg Olsen $4,560,000
13 Delanie Walker $4,375,000

You have to look at when some of these players signed their contracts. Olson, Cook, Walker were several years ago even though they outperformed Clay in 2014.

6 mil may be a little steep but the market will dictate. Supply and demand.

Top FA TE's are Jordan Cameron, Julius Thomas. Other guys avaialble will be Tony Moeki, Jermaine Gresham, Jacob Tamme, Owen Daniels, Niles Paul, Zach Miller.

(Also wondering about Dustin Keller)

Anthony Fasano makes 4 mil. Surely Clay is worth a lot more than that. It is still possible we could get him for 5 mil.

I'd take 1 mil less to NOT go to Buffalo.

Just think, the Bills could sign Matt Moore and Charles Clay.

Phinphanitc is reporting Denver is interested in Clay. Wow he would be a good target for Manning. Hope the phins don't overpay on him.

I'd let him go...6 million way too much and we have more pressing needs!

I'd rather we keep Odrick 1st

Transition tag on TE Charles Clay is costing Dolphins $7.01M now. Team will continue to talk contract but his per annum floor seems set.

Well, all we guaranteed was right of first refusal. Chances are it just gave us time to work out a long term deal.

Greg Olson has set the market at TE. Clay could follow soon to lessen the cap hit.

Olsen has been way more productive than Clay so I doubt Clay gets close to the 7.5 mil per year GO got.

Probably closer to 5 or 5.5 mil.

Olsen signed a 3 year 22.5 mil deal with a 12 mil bonus.

Olsen just had a 1k season and his last 3 seasons were better than Charles Clay's best season of 759 yards/ 6 td's.

Olsen has 5,188 yards and 42 TD's for his 8 year career.

Damn Rex. Bills expected to make substantial contract offer to Clay. Transition tag was a mistake.

I've read that Miami has a set price, if someone wants to overpay Miami will let them.

Because it's useless for a player with huge upside and in demand. No compensation. Teams like Buffalo, with huge cap space will just drive up the price.

and to lose him over the difference of 1 mil is stupid. Franchise him at 8 mil instead of 7 and they have to give us draft picks.

The Bills, which have $17.1 million in cap space after trading for LeSean McCoy and Matt Cassel, could create a difficult salary cap situation for Miami by creating a contract with a large first year cap hit - Sentinel

If we lose Clay go for Lance Kendicks(UFA Rams), I think he can do petty much the same things that Clay does.

Let him go. After paying suh we need the cap space and we can draft a seam tight end and sign Owen Daniels for less than half the cost of clay

We aren't getting into a bidding war. We tried to sign him before free agency. Couldn't get on the same page. If we were going to overpay, we'd have done it already.

We have a price we'll match. If someone wants to over pay, then he's gone.

Using the transition tag is a very sound move because it gives us the right to match any offer we deem reasonable and it doesn't force us to overpay him.

Its NOT a mistake using the transition tag on Clay.

The mistake would be paying an H-back 8-9m a year for 5 years.

The Bills still need to spend money on Hughes and a QB, so I am not so convinced they are going to pay Clay that big of a deal..

That's what everyone said about a slot receiver a few years ago.

It's only 1 more mil (peanuts) to franchise him and give yourself the time to work out a LT deal and no one is going to push your price up because they would have to give up a 1st (or 2) to make the offer.

He already said he wants to finish career here.

They also re-signed Hughes for 5 year 45 mil. (They now have 40 mil in cap space for their front 4)

It's a 5.5 cap hit for McCoy in 2015, probably 6.5 for Hughes. They had 17.1 mil after the trades for McCoy (before new contract) and Cassell. LM's original capo hit was around 10 mil so they cleared 4.5 mil.

They should have about 12.1 mil left.

Browns now in the mix as really interested in Charles Clay. Will make offer.

So now that Clay is visiting Cleveland, you know the Jets will wait on their offer so Cleveland doesn't have a point of reference. I wish they would just cut Ellerbe and get on with FA.

Buffalo is looking at Anthony Fasano to be the #2 TE. I think they have 15 mil in cap space.
