Sun Sentinel Piece by Chris Perkins--Game Manager

In today's Sports Section there is a headline that reads, "Tannehill OK with 'game manager'". I read the article and have mixed feelings about it. Chris Perkins the staff writer stated, "For the most part, however, Tannehill manages the game as opposed to winning the game. And no, he's (referring to RT) not concerned with being called a game manager."

Perkins went on to write, "The Dolphins aren't looking for Tannehill to carry the team on his shoulders like New England's Tom Brady or Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers."

Later he wrote: "The Dolphins aren't relying on Tannehill to win games. They are relying on him not to lose games. He's a game manager in the mold of Kansas City's Alex Smith or Cincinnati's Andy Dalton." He further states, "Bill Lazor doesn't consider that a negative."

All of this raises the question of just how good a QB Tannehill can become with this type of QB approach? Is RT limited because of it? Will he ever have the opportunity to become a top flight QB? Sure, Alex Smith is good, and Andy Dalton has moments of being good, but really, is this all he can be?

Perkins also cites Joe Philbin as commenting on the fact that he "thinks of good things when someone uses the term 'game manager'" meaning that it is also not a negative thing.

Other commentary was directed at Tannehill's willingness to do what is needed to win the game...this pointed to his running ability. Lazor was concerned that he may be running too much and could get hurt. We get that of course.

But the real question is Tannehill's growth being curtailed because of this idea of wanting him to be a game manager.

I suppose all that really matters is if the team wins often and can get to the playoffs and eventually be competitive enough to make it to the SB and win it. It's sure something to ponder.

I don't care if he's a game manager. It's his 3rd year as a pro and he's learning a new offense.

I think the training wheels have already been loosened a bit and will come off when he's completely comfortable with the system.

I wonder if those Chiefs fans are constantly bitching about their game managing QB and their 7-3 record?

ZERO TD's to their WR's...no deep balls. Oh no!

Att Comp Yds Comp % Yds/Att TD TD % INT INT % Long Sck Sack/Lost Rating
Alex Smith 291 193 1977 66.3 6.8 11 3.8 4 1.4 34 25 109 92.5

Att Comp Yds Comp % Yds/Att TD TD % INT INT % Long Sck Sack/Lost Rating
Ryan Tannehill 353 231 2354 65.4 6.7 17 4.8 7 2.0 50 25 164 92.2

Since he's not allowed to audible plays it's Lazor who's being the game manager.

If RT could be himself and be allowed to play HIS game I bet that article wouldn't even exist. At this point he's being held back IMO.

According to Lazor, the audibles are built in to the offense by the different reads he needs to make. Not a traditional offense.

I dont think game manager is really accurate here. Tannehill is making plays with his feet. So he is doing more then just managing the game.

It is obvious since he has started to run more the feel of the offense is better.

obviously they need to be more accurate in the red zone, and perhaps more creative in play calling

play action every week I see work in the redzone yet, I very seldom see us call it.

Lazor addressed some of this and said " Ryan sees the field as well as anyone I have been around, and because of that he has more options or as many options as any QB I have been around.... we do things differently, some of the options are what you call verbal audibles, some of them are right at the snap, some of them are built in options. Ryan has the ability to do those things and in my opinion does them very well.. He uses all the different options to get the ball distributed around the field, that is his strength... We are at our best when he uses those options.." (paraphrased a bit)

When asked if Ryan is a game manager......

"I don't know what that means...... and that term is almost always used in a negative context it seems. What we want Ryan to be is a winner. One of the things I love about Ryan is he is willing to do it however he has to do it...." (paraphrased a bit)

No one should ever respond to a post by dolphin/dolphinrmefav EVER Again. Even if he says Merry Christmas or if we win the SuperBowl and he puts his beer glasses out.

Does everyone agree?

The funny part about this game manager label. Perkins took some liberties with his answer....as they ALWAYS do.

Tannehill's answer was actually....

"I think about wins. At the end of the day you want to be winner, that's what it comes down to. It doesn't matter how you get it done, as long as you get it done. And come out with a win."

I didn't hear him say he was "ok" with it. He basically skirted the stupid question and reacted as a PRO.

Perkins also said "The Dolphins aren't relying on Tannehill to win games. They're relying on him not to lose games."

This is BS if you ask me. The Dolphins have run the ball 224 times (non-Qcool smiley. RT has thrown the ball 353 times! A difference of 129 snaps. For a team that is averaging 4.7 ypc, you would think that number would be larger for rushing if they were holding him back.

If Lazor was trying to "manage" the passing game, that number would be a little more equal. Something most teams strive to do.

Well i think that whoever was asking these questions are in the mindset of comparing RT to say the likes of Aaron Rodgers. Apparently if you are not a good Deep ball passé you are immediately labeled Game manager just like Alex Smith.

colonel I totally understand what a game manger is and means, my point is that Tannehill IS doing more then just managing the game by making plays with his feet.

True but his lack of deep ball. Aaron Rodgers at any time can throw a long TD and take a game over. That's the biggest issue we have with Tanny is his ability to not do that.

I think the point was that Tannehill is not elite like someone that can take over the game throw for 4-6 Tds

Winning is good and works for me.
