Its only money.

We have to spend 95% of 130 million this year so somebody has to get paid.

I couldn't care less who gets it if we win.

My only concerns with any contract are the length, the guaranteed money, and how the guaranteed money is paid out.

That's what matters because that is what you have to eat if a player doesn't work out. Everything beyond that is merely window dressing.

His injuries still make me nervous, especially at ten million a year... We had to do something, I just hope it was the right move... That is a lot of cap space every year for a player with back problems and who missed the last 5 games of last season with a knee injury... I wish I had more faith in our medical staff to make the right call... Ever since Daunte Culpepper debacle, any injury questions on big money players are unnerving.... If healthy Albert could really be a solid addition to our Oline...

Without knowing what Albert actually gets, based on whats being reported Long got paid more.

He was the highest paid Olineman in the league before he ever took a snap:

5 years, $57.5M (30 mill guaranteed)

A risky move, but was it necessary? I need to mull this over...

One thing is clear: Hickey disagrees with those who say that LT is not that important in today's NFL!

The other thing that is clear is that Hickey doesn't seem to mind running the risk of making key GM mistakes.

He basically traded away a FS that has always been healthy for one with serious injury concerns. They are both about the same level of player/play maker with a slight edge to Clemons in solid play...and make about the $$.

His is passing on a solid LT that is a better run blocker and equal pass protector for one that struggles run blocking and that has several injury issues.

AND it looks like he will overpay for him.

Rumor is they are also looking at Earl Mitchell as a replacement for Soliai. Big red flag on a player who only played well in a contract year.

So what he is showing me is he may be a little "Irish".

Mistake 1: signing a player to start and expecting him to be something he never has been....healthy

Mistake 2: signing a player after ONLY 1 so-so contract year. (See Reshad Jones).

I see Joe Philbin's fingerprints all over Hickey.

So plan on a year where we struggle to run the ball to the left (at least) and one where we are without our starting LT for 3 games and our FS for 4 or 5.

AND one where teams run all over us right up the middle.

WOW...and free agency has even started!

Looks like they are signing the playes Philbin wants. We now know he wanted Albet last year, and he has o be familiar w/ Delmars from his days in the NFC central at GB. My concern w/ both Albert and Delmars too is the injury history. We have 3 injured receivers who are coming back this year. I think we would want to be as injury free as possible at the other positions.

Earl Mitchell would be a solid player. He has steadily improved each year at HOU. He took the starting job last years and his stats were better than Soliai. The stat I like is 30 solo tackles vs 19 (Soliai) shows that he can get rid os his man quickly and find the rb. Even when he came off the bench (2010-12) he made plays.

Now you want to use stats? lol

I don't see steady improvement from Mitchell. I see a player who was drafted in the 3rd round who underachieved until his contract year. Sounds like Reshad Jones and hundreds of other players to me.

I am not that familiar with him other than looking at his history but it's a common bad sign.

Especially when you have guys out there like Pat Sims, Arthur Jones, Randy Starks, etc

It all comes down to the contracts. We are partially spared from LD's contract as it is only for 1 year. It may be ok as long as Hickey gets a true FS in the draft to develop that can possibly step in after the injury to LD.

If EM's contract is low enough and short term enough and he is only scheduled to be a 2 down run stopper then maybe it's ok IF we get a DT in the draft. But he is listed at 289-300 lbs. That's a run stopper? He is the prototype for a one year "prove it" deal.

I like meaninful stats. Like 30 solo stats vs 19. As you said you are NOT familiar w/ him. He always had a reputation as a hard worker at HOU. The stats I see are simple not convuluted in the years 2011-13 Mitchell number of tackles grew larger than Soliai (that crept).

Solo tackles Soliai Mitchell
2011 17 14
2012 18 19
2013 19 30

He is not my number 1 choice but if we picked him up I would not complain.

He lost it several years ago..I'd say around 2009 when he moved from GM to Pres...

Kellen Clemons ahead of Grimes? Really? WOW

Another thing I wonder about....

So maybe Miami contacted Monroe and were told he is waiting to resign with Baltimore...maybe they moved on to Albert at that point.(Monroe is still not re-signed).

Now they focus on Albert...last year we turned down the trade bc they wouldn't let us do a physical. Hiding what? Missed final 4 games of season. Probably a good no-deal. Knee injury, back injury, foot injury, etc.

I just hope they have a backup plan to at least get a chance to look at Collins or Veldeer. We offer 10mil to Albert and he takes a physical tomorrow....the best FA LT's are gone....then what? We are screwed.

That's a lot of money for an aging player (30 in November) when we passed on our own injured player (Jake Long) who just turned 28 years old at that time and signed for 1.5 mil less per year.

He didn't earn a starting spot as a 3rd round draft pick until now. Everyone around here would call him a bust if he were in Miami.

He played between two pretty good guys in a 3-4 front and one of them just happens to be the best defensive linemen in the NFL and probably the best in years. that's a little different than playing next to Jared Odrick.

Besides Shaun Cody is the player he couldn't beat out. A journeyman who flopped out of Detroit as a bust and went on to mediocrity in Houston.

Like I said, for the right price as a role player.

Saying all that, Mizzou, look at what Ireland did last year. How many players did he draft and pick up in FA that had been injured and either did not see the playing field or played a limited number of snaps (including their #1 draft choice whom they traded up for)?

I sure hope this isn't going to be repeat of 2013.

From an Armondo tweet...

Bill Polian just said Dannell Ellerbe played "well" for "ok" money last year and called him Daniel.

Albert is a good acquisition. At just 30 years--he's got plenty of good plays ahead of him.

5 yr 45 mil, 25 mil guaranteed. Less than what Jake Long was getting paid from us, so I aint bitchin'.

Now lets see what Tanny can do, if he's truly for real or not. I give him credit for not leaving the field on a stretcher this past season.

I was actually hoping we'd pick up Monroe primarily due to his youth, but Albert was my 2nd choice among the FAs, though I don't really know much about Veldheer or Collins. My guess is that Monroe simply wanted to stay in Baltimore and was practically 'off the table' for us.

Kansas City has traditionally developed and fielded very good offensive lines year over year - especially from a run-blocking perspective. So, one intangible he has is that he knows what it's like to be a part of a good offensive line. More than any other position group, the OL has to play well as a unit, so it's good to have someone who understands what that chemistry looks and feels like.

No doubt we overpaid for a tackle who is probably top 1/2 but definitely not top 5 and maybe not even top 10. However, knowing that we have two starting OL in the top 1/2 at their positions is a bit of a relief, considering that there are still 3 holes to fill. I'm hoping that this will help compensate for the instability that will likely accompany the massive overhaul this year.

And Monroe was signed for a little over 7 mil per year.

I'm sure Monroe was looking for Brandon Albert type money, odd that no one would pay him

Looks like he just wanted to stay in Baltimore and was willing to take less. Raised in Jersey, college ball at Virginia that is a 2.5 hour drive to Baltimore.
