Since the new GM is going to have total control over personnel, the coaching staff being there really isn't that important.

Its far more important that the scouts are there since they will be the ones working, for and reporting to, the new GM.

Andrew Abramson @AbramsonPBP

People in Browns organization believe Dolphins will hire Farmer. One called it "almost definite." But Ross, of course, is unpredictable.

So we hire a new GM and expect him to use the same scouts? That is a little odd... WOuldnt a GM want to work with his own scouts that he trusts and has a relationship with? Or does not only our new GM get no control over any of his coaching staff but he also gets the last guy who was fired scouts? And I am not knocking Gaine, I hear good things about him, but come on this is all a bit ridiculous structure...

Our next GM is probably there, we just don't know who it is yet.

And maybe he is studying QBs, CB's and DE's, because that is what the team he currently works for needs to improve on their roster...

Also you think that some other team is going to let him walk with all the material and reports they paid him to produce to give to another team... Sure the guy is there, but it is not the same, what they are doing and producing as I said is property of another team..

It is not the end of the world but it surely isn't a good thing, or something that doesn't matter...

hey crowder, don't you know ross made billions in real estate? so this is a perfectly acceptable way to run the team, notwithstanding the fact that the rest of the nfl is laughing at us and those who are not are scratching their heads in confusion

Actually its not odd at all.

Scouts contracts aren't up until after the draft.

He's not going to be able to hire his own people until May anyway.

Seriously...what team is going to let its scouts walk to another organization and take with them the work they've done on college players for the last 9 months?

Why do you think the Browns are freezing Farmer out of their player evaluation meetings until this is resolved?

You may be able to hire a guy to be GM if a team lets you interview him, but you can't raid other teams scouts until after the draft.

Another overblown story by the media IMO. The scouts can handle it. I'd rather see Philbin locked in a room with Lazor right now. They're talking scheme, yes, but also personnel. Who can play? Who can't? What are we missing? What are our priorities?

Very important stuff given that the offense was pretty anemic and the draft and FA fast approaching.

The problem as I see it is, are these scouts even going to be Miami Dolphin employees when a new GM gets hired?

How thorough a job are they doing now for an organization that may fire them next week?

IMO the new GM would be crazy to fire them. The Dolphins have one of the best scouting staffs in the NFL, a legacy from the Rick Spielman days and built on by Jeff Ireland. Say what you will about both men in terms of lousy decision making, but both benefitted from reams and reams of GOOD data on players.

None of the scouts will get let go until after the draft.

He'll probably hire Ireland as a college scout...

Talk about several steps down.

Does that mean we can still hire him then as a GM? Is that Ross's master plan?

I'm sure the Falcons have protected themselves from having to deal with that...Probably in the contract and they probably have refusal rights.

Agreed, this whole situation is way overblown. Philbin is doing what he should be doing and thats working to fix our scheme and sysatem flaws with the new OC and the rest of the staff. The scouts are doing thier jobs as is the assistant GM...we have it covered.

Like I said. I was looking at NFL network and there was Bellicheat sitting in the stands watching the Senior Bowl practices. Nuff said.

It may not prove that Philbin is doing wrong, but it certainly does DISprove the theory that a head coach is wasting his time being there.

I'd agree completely that a coach would not be wasting his time by being there...just that it isn't "necessary" for a HC to be there.

I'd would say though that the GM and the scouts would "absolutely be necessary" though.

What a cluster. No wonder we draft guys that can't play. Damn they should have called me I would have went scouting for them
This is like little league. if you draft based on the tryout( combine) you are in trouble!
