switching to 3-4?

given what we've got on this team, would it not make more sense to switch back to a 3-4 defense?

RE odrick
NT solia
LE starks or if we don't resign him then shelby

OLB Wake
MLB Misi
MLB Ellerbe
OLB Vernon/Jordan (not the clinton advisor)

I don't see us resinging both starks and solia so this move back allows us to lose starks without much damage. I think Shelby was solid against the run. allows us to get wheeler off the field.

thoughts?

Miami had a 3rd ranked rushing defense. Philbin and Coyle changed to the 4-3 and it dropped to 13th. Ireland swapped LBs and it dropped all the way to 24th. Philbin and Ireland are the reasons why Miami can't run the ball or stop the run anymore.

Get a new Head Coach and GM and go back to what was working. Ross screwed up by not firing Ireland with Sparano, and by hiring Philbin. Instead of keeping the team's strengths and fixing its weaknesses, Philbin destroyed the strengths because they didn't fit his system.

I don't think so.

I think most systems are hybrid these days anyway so you get elements of 4-3 and 3-4 depending upon your personnel.

But our personnel is better suited towards the 4-3 in my opinion.

I haven't seen anything that would lead me to believe that Wake or Vernon can cover as a 3-4 OLB. Jordan probably could but Wake and Vernon are double digit sack guys now and you'd be asking them do play to their weaknesses not strengths.

Our problems on defense are not that great. Its our LB corps. Ellerbe and Wheeler have been major busts. Misi is a solid NFL LB. Jenkins has flashed that he could be a contributor.

Our focus on defense should be to rebuild the DT depth by signing Soliai, drafting a young player and signing an affordable guy to replace Starks.

Then we need a FS...clemons re-signed or an upgrade.

The we need two LB's. I'd love to see us draft Denzel Perryman from UM to replace Ellerbe, move Ellerbe outside and get rid of Wheeler.

And we aren't gaining much by the switch. if you consider who is currently under contract, we would be 1 NT short and 1 DE short for the 3-4. In the 4-3 we would be just 1 DT short.

Use either Jordan or Vernon as a 4-3 OLB as Denver uses Von Miller.

Yes, 4-3 with Jordan at one of the OLB spots where he can blitz or be used to cover the TE & RB's.

You saw that formation a bit this year.

If we keep Coyle, we will not change to a majority 3-4... But I do agree we will not have the personnel to run the 4-3 as well next year as when we switched to it a couple years ago... When we had Mcdaniels, Starks and Solia, with Vernon and Odrick who can play both inside and outside... Also our LBs didn't have such a great year in our 4-3 scheme... But you can't really change schemes with Coyles as our DC IMO...

well they talked a mean game about doing just that. moving them around to confuse offenses but it just never happened.

much like our fast paced offense.

Smith had 14 sacks as a rookie and over 1k snaps at 3-4 OLB. I don't believe he played ST.

Jordan had limited playing time because teams were able to run on us so he wasn't even on the field much. He had fewer snaps than Shelby.

I am not so sure Jordan is a 4-3 DE. He could probably do more damage at 4-3 OLB in coverage and vs the run or as an OLB in a 3-4. Not unless he can put on some functional strength and expand his pass rush moves.

I know. I was being ironical.

I agree with what Truth and Eesti have said.

I'd like to see Jordan at SLB this season. Misi is a fine player but Jordan would be much more dangerous at that position. Maybe Misi can complete the linebacker carousel by trying an ILB position.

And I'll continue to bang the drum for Jelani Jenkins at WLB.

I think Jordan would be a fine LB, but we moved up in draft to get him as a DE.

again, did not like the move.

he was brought in to be the next JT. He's got a similar body type to JT and is probably even more athletic. I see no reason why he can't be a LB, which is the position he played in college anyway

JT's rookie stats.....

Started 11 games, played 13. 5 sacks, 2 Forced fumbles, 2 Fumble recoveries, 30 tackles, 12 assists.

Jordan stats...

Played in all 16 games, no starts. 2 sacks, 2 pass defense, 18 tackles, 6 assists.

"He was brought in to be the next JT"....according to whom? I never heard Ireland say that and he is pretty dumb. That is a tall order to fill!

that was the word at the time around the pick. that he has similar body style and quickness to JT and he was brought in to fill that pass rushing role. Obviously whether he is going to be a HOF type guy like JT would be the absolute best case scenario--but no quesiton he was viewed as playing the same position and role as JT.
