He'd be on my short list as far an operations director of player personnel goes along with Jon Gruden and Tony Dungey for starters...I'd want a football guy. He'd report directly to Ross and would oversee the entire operations/personnel side of the franchise. His counterpart would be Dawn Aponte who would oversee the finacial side.

I'd position this title above the GM and have Ireland report to him directly.

This person would work in concert with Ireland as far as player aquisitons/drafts are concerned and they would be a joint effort...with judicious input from Philbin, and the coordinators as to what type of player they needed. Ireland would continue to pick the players but a consensus would have to be reached...in the event of a stalemate the director would have the deciding vote after reviewing the input.

The point would be to cooperate and get the right players and the best fits. Not to step on each others toes. Ross would settle any personality or interpersonal conflict issues.

I'd also spare no expense to get this person...whomever it was in the end.

With all the vacancies and corresponding needs for HC we better move on FAST if we're going to make a change.

IMO every day that passes with Philbin retained means he's coming back next year. We certainly can't wait until after the Stupid Bowl to start shopping for a new HC.

But this is also somewhat entwined with the status of Ireland -- if he's canned then it's a question if the new GM will be OK with Philbin & Co. or want to recast the program.

Either way, if Ross is going to make serious changes (beyond firing OC and a few position coaches) he needs to be decisive and DO IT SOON!

My opinion. Of course.

BNF.

Guys. Sparano ring a bell? Ross is a idiot. If we fire Philben it will be a couple weeks.

I don't see any new GM being satisfied with keeping Philbin.

NUMBER TWO I don't see any OC that has a brain in his head accepting the job of OC WITH Philbin remaining as HC.

Philbin would be resentful of any replacement, unwilling to accept any suggestions, over-critical and make life hell for anyone replacing Sherman.

The people on this chat board might live in denial about Philbin and his stubborn pride coupled with his basic stupidity but the people who have to feed their families and to whom football is a livelihood won't step into this trap.

Maybe what is taking Ross so long is that he is shopping around and is getting no takers and is in the process of LEARNING that it has to be all or nothing.

That goes for the GM as well, maybe he is being told by prospective candidates that Philbin has to go otherwise they won't come.

I don't care. Whoever comes in is going to be some bum. They are always bums. We can not ever go after anyone worth anything. So congrats to another crappy football year. Whohooo

The only reason I could see for Ross to hold off is if he has his eye on a coordinator that is presently on a playoff team.

I never thought of that Cap. Aren't there tampering rules even?

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the tampering rules apply to a HC who is still under contract.

For coordinators, I believe it is the GM or HC who gives an official OK to allow the coordinator to interview with another team. But, although I am not positive, it is possible the permission is not required if it is a move up.

Well since 4 HCs have been fired and thus 4 teams are competing for replacements, I was mainly concerned about HC.

Understood, but I thought I would clarify the rules, since tampering concerns head coaches.

Again, I may be wrong and someone here can correct me.

Dude I'm getting Sick of you.

We have what every coach wants , a starting young QB, and a great nucleus of a team. Just enough to be tinkered with to make it your own. Yes it was hard to get good people in the past , but what did we offer them besides Sunshine? Now its a much more appealing opportunity. We can snag a Gruden or a Cowher if they were interested. Personally I'd want Jimmy Johnson if his heart was into it again. For GM as well.

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

Ok so on paper we look like a amazing spot. Problem is our owner. I would be surprised if we actually fired Philben. I do not think Philben is capable of recruiting a good OC. If by some slim chance that he gets canned, I just do not see any good proven HC come in.

I would be the happiest man in the world if Cowher would coach this team. However why would he give up a dream job like sports announcing to come coach the Dolphins?

If he retains Philben then our season is already lost. Just my opinion. Philben is a wash.

Bring in Cowher. Bring in someone that knows what they are doing.

Give him the reigns. Let him fire coaches and hire his own coaches.

We need someone with fire in his vein like cowher has.

Philbin is not going to take this team anywhere.

Replace the name Cowher with Parcells above and it's 2008 all over again.

not necessarily. I just don't think cowher is the answer.

we tried it with jimmy Johnson. that got us the wannstedt error.

we tried it with parcells. that got us jeff Ireland.

Gruden and Cowher are the big names out there, but they have both stated they are happy right where they are, so let's just drop those names from our wish list, eh, guys?

Yes...Gruden removed his name from consideration for coaching and Cowher said it's "highly unlikely" he'll coach this year.

Frankly, I would be apprehensive to hire another burnout to run this team.

We did it with Johnson and Parcels and what did they do? QUIT in the middle of it! No thanks.

That said, Cowher was NEVER a GM and NEVER chose the talent in Pittsburgh. That was Tom Donahoe, followed by Kevin Colbert. while neither were GM's during Cowher's time in Pit, they had final say in personnel matters. Both held the title of Director of Football Operations answering to the Rooney's.

Handing Cowher full control would be a huge mistake IMO. he was a great coach but had GREAT players when he was in Pittsburgh.

All GM's or personnel guys go through phases of success. The above mentioned guys had success and then failure. Just like Carl Peterson, Bill Polian and just about every other GM.

It's a team effort and takes more than just one guy to do it. When Donahoe was successful he had great scouts working under him...like Colbert, etc. It takes a village, so to speak.

We need a GM who can also bring in talented evaluators to work with him. That is why SF and Seattle are successful right now. Good GM with good scouts = great personnel department.

Pair that with a good coaching staff and that = success IMO.

We have Jeff Ireland and Brian Gaine...not doing so well.
