I'm not taking any position one way or another but aren't people on this board always criticizing us for using 1st round draft choices CONTINUALLY on o line.
BTW I think Pouncey is great.
What do I think.......like always, "you take the best player at a position of need".
I don't have any "you never take this position in the first round" (unless perhaps kicker or punter).

ONLY when you don't have a QB to protect in the first place. #1 Priority when rebuilding a team is getting a QB. Over and over we watched this team ignore that position . We used a First round #1 overall pick on a Left Tackle when there was nothing to protect. That's like building a giant stone wall around a log cabin.
But after you put so many pieces in place, Now you have to protect it. Stop putting the Cart before the Horse. We now have a Stallion, time to get that cart in order.
I can take a stab at the ones on the list that we could have had and I would have wanted with my 20/20 hindsight:
- Aaron Rodgers (instead of Ronnie Brown)
- Tob Brady (can't stand the thought, but if he had never been a Pat, I might have liked him)
- Drew Brees (instead of Jamar Fletcher AND Dante Culpepper
- Matt Ryan instead of Jake Long
- Joe Flacco instead of Jake Long
- Michael Vick as FA (though I don't think we could have handled him as well as Reid and the Eagles did)
- Colin K instead of Pouncey (probably, though I like Pouncey a lot)
Those I might have taken but been less excited about:
- Romo, Dalton, Schaub, Smith (FA)
Prior QBs - Warner comes to mind
Good exercise, though, as Tannehill is relatively near the top of what we could have had up to current with just the above exceptions for me.
The harder part is what would have the assembling of talent look like if we had someone like Brees in place for 5+ years vs. searching for (or avoiding searching for) a QB for that time. Impossible to say - too many variables.
Well, Tsstampers there is one "unfair"s on your list. I think it's unfair like I said originally to blame us for not drafting Brady when everybody else in the league did also for five straight rounds. (even the Pats themselves).
I'm basically talking about conscious choices we made, a GREAT example being passing on Drew Brees to get Jamar Fletcher.
Flacco - I was just pointing out that - hindsight being 20/20 - I would have rather had him than Long. Not #1 overall, but the point of the exercise was 'of the ones we had a chance to get'.
Same could be said of Rodgers, as apparently he wasn't going anywhere near #2 on draft day (though he was #1 up until just a few weeks before draft day). Yet I'd probably rather have him than anyone on the list right now.

Flacco was my favorite QB in that draft. I wasn't sold on Ryan and I thought Henne wasn't that far behind him.
Even I wouldn't have considered Flacco #1.
I thought, as apparently Parcells did, that we could get Long in the first and Flacco with the first pick in the 2nd.
Agreed, tstamper but even had we taken Brady, it's also debatable from a pure standpoint of logic whether he would have become the Hall of Fame QB he became with the Patriots.
A quarterback has to have a supporting team.
Tom Brady meshed with the supporting cast he had.
He might not have even been the same on another powerhouse team like the Dallas Cowboys.
You know life consists of a million different choices leading to a million different roads sometimes and you take one street and you're dead in an auto accident (whether it's your regular route or not) and you take another rode and you see a convenience store, go in to buy a lottery ticket and win the lotto (or get killed in a hold up).
But I guess I have to concede that applies to everything, even us passing on Drew Brees for Jamar Fletcher.
Yep - factors upon factors making it impossible to ever know. But I feel better about their trajectory than I have in quite some time, and I'll feel even better at 4-1 :-)

There was absolutely no damn reason for Wanny to pass on Brees for Fletcher. Brees was a good QB at Purdue. I seem to remember another QB that Miami drafted out of Purdue. He did pretty well.

Yeah, then with our pick in round 2 (not sure which year), Wanny chose a LB, who was as surprised as anyone that he was picked there.

Oh, there were reasons....not good ones, but there were reasons.

Drew Brees was obviously too short to play QB in the NFL and his arm wasn't strong enough!
