When we drafted Sturgis, I believe this was a foregone conclusion.

I guess we could've held onto him a bit longer to try to squeeze a 6th or 7th in trade (like we did with Jay Feely a few years ago), but I am alright with making this move now.

Does anyone know the dead money associated with the move?

I still think we ruined his confidence in the Jets overtime game.

Dan was good at one point but inconsistent over the last few seasons, thanks for the memories Carp. I look forward to what Sturgis is going to do.

I think we have over 19 mil in cap space now and something like 26 mil next year....with many FA's.

eesti- do those numbers include Reshad Jones 7.5 million a year extension that was just signed or are they pre Jones cap numbers..

How many of those FA's are going to get big raises?

I believe we have $16,262,685 available cap space after figuring in Reshad Jones and Carpenter.

Our FA's next year are...

Paul Soliai
Randy Starks
Dustin Keller
Richie Incognito
Chris Clemons
John Denney
John Jerry
Koa Misi
Nolan Carroll
Tyson Clabo
Brent Grimes
Lance Louis
Austin Spitler

Exclusive Rights FA

Devlin
Freeney
Binns
Kaddu
RJ Stanford

There are three guys on that list in line for significant raises over their cap numbers this year:

Keller, Clemons and Grimes.

* Soliai and Starks are going to have to take pay cuts to stay on the team and its likely one of them will be gone.

* Incognito is already making top money for a RG at $5.5M and we just drafted Thomas as the guy to eventually replace him. Can't see him getting a big raise.

* Denny will be back. but he's a LS. He's not breaking the bank.

* All the other guys: Jerry, Misi, Carroll, Louis and Spittler will be lucky to make this years team. They aren't getting big money from us next year.

* Clabo could get a raise on a short term deal if he plays great but its likely we can resign him at about what he's getting hits year if he works out.

None of those guys is in line for a raise. Binns has already been cut and the other guys aren't even starters.

I doubt there are very many teams in better position cap wise than we are next year.

I wasn't implying anything but it's not exactly a non-issue.

There are still 8 starters that will need to be resigned or replaced as well as a quality long snapper and ST's player that will be 35 this December.

Dallas Thomas has not shown much of anything other than being a project. In all liklihood we will be in need of two starting guards and a starting RT and that's best case scenario IF Martin works out.

There is no telling how FA will shake out. Just because Incognito doesn't justify a raise, doesn't mean we can resign him. Ireland could very well play hard ball (as usual) and Incognito could cop an attitude and walk. He is just the example but the same can be said for all players. Money talks.

Those 8 starters account for about 30 million in cap space this year. Yes, most are in the final and most expensive year of their deals but even at a more realistic lower number that hit is significant.

There are still a lot of unanswered questions regarding the 2012 draft class and who will be able to start next year.

As it looks right now....

We could end up with two starting CB's in Taylor and Davis...and not need to bring Grimes back on a big contract.

Dion Sims may be a decent TE but he seems to be in the mold of Anthony Fasano and not a seam threat like Keller.

We will likely be drafting a DT in the first round next year as well as several O-linemen early but we will be very lucky if we can find 3 starters in a draft.

On thing is for sure. It will be another nail-biting off season.

Managing the cap is an issue every year. I was just saying that we really aren't in a tough spot next year.

true, but just because some of them will be replaced doesn't mean they will be replaced with more expensive players.

Could be. but the only position we'll spend impact money on is LT if we need one. If we don't then I just don't see us breaking the bank for an OG or RT. We didn't do it this year when we had the money and there were guys out there. I doubt we suddenly do it next year when w have less money. I suppose it depends on the FA market and the draft talent.

Maybe he goes to St Louis to play with Jake Long.

I'll survive if he's not back.

Not necessarily. It all depends on the structure of the contract.

There are always questions like that.

that's true.

maybe, maybe not. Maybe Egnew is.

i don't think there's any chance we will be drafting a DT in the first round next year.

We'll be bringing either Soliai or Starks back, and our other starting DT will be a 1st rounder in Odrick. I doubt we target another 1st round DT next year but you never know how the draft will fall.. If Warren Sapp falls into your lap you take him.

I think we'll be looking for Oline, LB, RB, TE or possibly even a QB in the first round next year before we look for a DT

Unless you have a HOF QB, they all are.

Since we will be drafting 25-32 it could go in any number of directions smiling smiley ...unless you believe some of the mocks who have us picking from 11 to 16 to 20.

Soliai and Starks will be 30 this year. I still think Soliai is the one they will keep and squeeze a few more years out of him. He is more apt to take less money to stay at home (as he did before) and Starks is not happy about getting franchised...he wants a payday (although his age will limit him).

(The franchise tag is usually pretty decent for G, S and TE's so that is an option)

You are probably right...if we resign Soliai then the need for a 1st round DT is not as important. It depends on how well Odrick does as a 3 technique this year.

lol. I think we'll likely be drafting in that 18-24 range.

We really should go with BPA but our biggest positions of need (assuming we are, or almost are, a playoff team) look like Oline, TE, LB, FS, WR, RB, DT.

If we are picking earlier than that, then our first pick is probably a QB.

Yeah, I'd keep Soliai also. He's a run stuffer. He should be able to do that longer than a big who relies on agility and speed.

I'd think he'd cost around $5m a year for 2 years.

Grimes is an option for the tag also. It would mean we wouldn't have to make a long term commitment.

Yeah, all things are fluid, but I think Ordick will be fine.

I think we draft a DT next year, just not early.

Cross one off the list eesti:

Armando Salguero ?@ArmandoSalguero 1m
LS John Denney signs a 3 year extension at $1,150,029 avg per year. Longest tenured Dolphin will be around much longer

only guy on the list we should break the bank for is Grimes. anyone else isn't irreplaceable. We need only one of Solia or Starks. Keller is not worth a ton of $$.

If Keller puts up 65/815/5 like he did with Mark Sanchez then he is capable of more with a better QB IMO.

He starts sniffing 1k yards and 10 td's....he is worth a ton of money. That's basically #1 WR production but they are doing it down the middle of the field. Not many TE's produce like that....maybe a handfull.

There was 1 TE who had over 1k yards last year and 6 that had over 800 yards.

Let's see what he does this year.
