Cruz is a restricted FA. Nicks is already under contract for next year.
They can keep Cruz for another year without having to pay him much.
A $2.88M tender would cost us our 1st round pick to sign him.
A $2.02M tender costs us a 2nd.
Thanks, but no thanks. I'm not paying a WR $8-10m AND giving up a 1st/2nd round pick for him, although I'm sure the Giants would let him walk for our #1.
If you want Cruz you'll have to wait until next year and hope he hits the open market.

Actually, that's the buzz here in NY from the guys that cover the Giants.
They think they can only sign one long term and they prefer Nicks.

They may be the buzz, but i'll believe it when I see it
Victor Cruz ran 70% of his routes from the slot WR position. We need a Split End (X) WR more than anything else, with Hartline moving back to Flanker (Z). Can Cruz carry that load? I don't know, because he hasn't been asked to fill that role so far.

That's the word, but with the cuts the Giants have already made and will probably make (more), they will resign both. They aren't going to let Cruz get away.

I wouldn't let BOTH of them go. Hartline is more productive (although only one TD this past season).
I still say the WRs on our roster, at the present time, will be more productive with a speed guy that can open up the defenses. Get that guy and Hartline's TD numbers will improve, but his receptions and yards will probably drop (somewhat).
HArtline has been getting a lot of grief for only scoring 1 TD and maybe rightfully so but Andre Johnson only had 4 this year...as did Brandon Lloyd, Anquan Boldin, Jeremy Maclin, Larry Fitzgerald, Steve Smith.
Dwayne Bowe only had 3 as did Hakim Nicks althogh I think he was injured.
As I recall there were very few deep balls thrown to Harline this past season. Except for the home run in the Arizona game most of the rest were overthrown or underthrown. Connect on a couple of those and we wouldn't be criticizing his lack of production. You could argue that he's not fast enough to get under the overthrown passes but, the underthrown ones are more on the QB. Give him and Tannehill more time to gel and the production will improve. If we replace him with a new guy we will likely be having this conversation again next off-season.

Hartline had the 10th most receptions in the NFL on deep balls (targets more than 20 yards downfield). He was 13th in total deep ball targets. And he was 6th in completion percentage on deep targets, trailing only Demaryius Thomas, Steve Smith, Dez Bryant, Reggie Wayne, and Calvin Johnson.
Last I checked if you don't score you don't win. Hartline is probably a 3 at best. our redzone efficiency didn't seem to improve much over the Henne days. This year will tell for Tannehill
You just never know in the NFL. As we all know some WR's take 3 or 4 years to learn the nuances of playing the position. Hartline stepped up in his 4th season by leaps and bounds all while playing with a rookie QB, in a new offense and absolutely no other weapons in the passing game. Thus coverage was probably always rolled his direction.
He could build on this momentum and continue to be a thousand yard receiver or he could turn into a possession receiver like OJ McDuffie. He was a favorite in Miami and had exactly ONE 1k season which happened in his 6th year with a HOF QB in a pass first offense.
Roddy White averaged less than 500 yards per year over his first two years and then turned in 6 consecutive 1k seasons.
Saying Hartline is a 3rd WR at best is nonsense. He is a true #2...and probably a very good #2 at that. Of the 19 WR's to have a thousand yards last year, Only Denver, New Orleans and Atlanta had (2) thousand yard receivers.
10 TD's is considered a great season for a WR. Only 10 WR's in the entire league scored in double digits last year. All 10 had Pro Bowl QB's.
It could be that Hartline has found the right offense for him. It's probably not a good idea to let him walk when we already have to find 3 more like him.

I agree that Hartline is a good #2 WR, but whether that will be his role in Miami would depend on the offseason. Miami nabs one of the top 3 FA WRs, Hartline is now the #2. If Miami either grabs one of the other FA WRs or drafts one who really shows something and has speed, then he is a #3.
I think Miami should resign Hartline, but at the right price. When you have agents making these deals, the player doesn't always get what he wants.
Eesti is right. Hartline is a very good #2. That said, his skills don't make him a great red zone threat. He's not real physical, and he does not get much separation on the short quick routes. Throw in that with our current weapons, he draws extra attention in the red zone, and it's going to be difficult for him until he gets a different supporting cast. If Hartline did what he did this year in our offense, in a new scheme for him, with a rookie QB, with no other real threats, imagine what he would do in the Pats' system.
