This is a moderated phorum for the CIVILIZED discussion of the Miami Dolphins. In this phorum, there are rules and moderators to make sure you abide by the rules. The moderators for this phorum are JC and Colonel.
All of us(myself included) are looking for some light at the end of the tunnel. But it is really WAY too early. I'm not looking for a winning season right out of the gate. I really am just looking for an improvement, some hope that the Miami Dolphins are on the right track.
Let's not forget a couple of really major issues here:
1. Philbin lost his son this year. My heart goes out to him and I'm sure he is still dealing with the issues of losing his son. Maybe Philbin was looking for a "new leaf" and decided a change of scenery would help him deal with his loss? I don't know. All I know is that losing someone, especially a family member, is extremely painful...probably more painful for a parent as they are usually the first to go.
2. New coach, new rules. New sheriff in town. It happens every season. Remember when JJ got here? It happens. People are brought in for a reason. Philbin was brought in to improve on what Sporano started. And it starts with respect and discipline, which I can see Philbin is trying hard to instill. I do think it was slightly hypocritical to air clubhouse laundry publicly after stating he wanted everything in-house. But no man (or woman) is perfect and all of us make mistakes. He will make many mistakes this year. It's not the mistakes that are important, but what you learn from them and keep from not making the same mistake. Jimmy Johnson's first year as a headcoach was a disaster record-wise, but he was able to learn from that first season and with some good picks & trades, he built Dallas into a small dynasty. No doubt he probably is making mistakes as a leader and how he coaches the team, who he wants on the roster, and anything else that goes with coaching. But I'm not worried about that. I'm worried about next season to see if the team improves. If they do, then he's learned a great deal his first season and all is not lost. If they don't, then at some point the team has to realize what is not working.
3. Regular season. We haven't even played a regular season game. I'm not looking for an 8-8 season. I'm not even looking for a 6-10 season. Fact is that we have a first year head coach with no headcoaching experience in the NFL and a rookie QB. That alone should tell you that this season isn't about the playoffs...it's about building a foundation that will continue to grow and improve.
So this year, I will be eagerly watching the Dolphins but will be looking at how they improve throughout the year. It may start off ugly, but if I see they are improving as the season progresses and if they play their best ball at the end of the season, then this season was a success. The days of hoping for a playoff spot are long gone. I'm really just looking for a new beginning that will give us fans hope for the following seasons ahead.
I'm not quite ready to check in for a 6-10 yet, but what I've seen in preseason makes anything better questionable.
That said ... if the wheel is still in motion for improving the WR corp then a lot could change. Something has to happen there, either with our guys stepping it up or getting some help
Id love to see Wallace end up in miami
- The OL will get better.
- The offense will get better, especially when we get some run in the mix and more passes to the backs in the playbook to move the chains.
- The defense quite frankly is a big dissappointment thus far.
The main goal I am looking for is to see if we finally found a franchise QB. If RT comes in, continually gets better and shows he "it" then i will be a happy man. Everything else will fall into place after that. At least the odds say they will.
Manning went 3-13 his first year but you could see he had the gift. I think we will be better because we have a defense. Something Indy never had. I also don't think Tannehill throws 28 ints.
Manning also had Marshall Faulk who had 1300 rushing and 86 receptions for over 900 receiving. We don't have Faulk but we have a lesser version in Reggie Bush. Who knows what he can do in the right system? Harrison only had 776 yards receiving in PM's first year.
You are VERY right about one thing in particular SoCal....It is by far too early to make judgement. That is my main point over all this doom and gloom stuff.
But Tannehill can't do it by himself. He needs a running game (he's got it because even the Lebanese ran well in the last game) pass blocking, receiving, and a good defense (last game was an improvement).
But you can't just look at next year's record and blame RT if that record is bad.
Of course, all the "quarterback determines the course of the record" people will do just that.
