So, what do we do with Henne now?

This is Henne's last year of his contract. I wouldn't mind keeping him around as a backup, but he'd have to be making backup money. With this year sunk and Henne hurt, do we try to re-sign him now to a reasonable extension? If we do nothing, then it's because Ireland knows he's gone at the end of the season as well. Might as well put us in a terrible situation of having no vet QB or NT this offseason!
I think they will probably wait until after the season to make a decision.
If we do have a chance to draft Luck, then its probably best to simply cut all ties with Henne and move on. The guy is still young enough where he will want to play, or at least compete for a job, so it would probably hold a young QB back more than help.
On the other hand, if Ireland stays and does something stupid like get Orton, then they will definitely keep Henne around. I can't imagine Ireland survives this season though.

Again, I would love to keep Henne as a backup. He is one of the best backups in the league, which is super important to a team.
I just dont want him as our starter. He is not a starter. He is a backup.

And depending on the extent of his injury, his health status could bring his price down as well. I think Henne is worth keeping on the roster, as you said, a backup or a placeholder for one more year as a draftee is developed.
If Henne is a back-up to Andrew Luck, playing behind our offensive line then Henne will be the starter again before very long. I would guess that Henne is probably ready to move on and get a chance to play for a real team.
I'm fine with keeping him as a backup but honestly, I'm fine with letting him walk. Our offense played about the same with Matt Moore in, so who cares what happens to Henne?
