just read that we worked out julius jones and bryant westbrook. SERIOUSLY? we had an entire offseason to solve our RB "problem" (i.e., the presence of ricky and ronnie) and after week 1, this is what we're stuck doing?

Also reported they are looking at free agent RB Thomas Clayton.
I guess this means Daniel Thomas is not close to being healthy yet, does anyone have any new info regarding Thomas?

This is starting to remind me of the Marino years, when we had no luck finding a decent RB.

Yeah, this is an unusually ugly outcome to the way Ireland handled our RB sitch over the offseason.
Everyone was so mesmerized by the Reggie signing, that we lost track of the fact we're losing BOTH Ronnie and Ricky. Either one of them would have been the perfect compliment to Bush.
Another low mark on Ireland's scorecard is his handling of the FS position. FS should be locked down by now being such a critical element of a top D.

YUP!!!

Too many cheap mediocre roster moves.

We knew we needed a TE t compete/compliment Fasano....we did nothing.

Yeremiah Bell and the rotating cast of FS's were often out of position and let teams #3 WR's make big plays on 3rd and long. ....again we did nothing to address that.

Our LB's were getting toasted by every TE in the league....we bring in Barnett....not a bold move.

Instead of trading up to draft Daniel Thomas, they should have re-signed Ronnie or Ricky, brought in reggie, and used the 2nd round pick on a FS.

bush is not an every down back. everyone knows it, from his coach in college to the super bowl winning coach of the saints. but this regime is SO much smarter than everyone else, they and they alone see bush and know that despite his size and injury history, he is a 15-20 carry a game between the tackle runner. at least he better be, bc our only other RB they planned to give the ball to (sorry lex) is an untested, fumble prone rookie, now injured. kudos.

Bush had 11 carries. That's it. It's not like we gave it to him 30 times on the ground. And he caught 9 passes. And I have no problems with throwing the ball to him 7 to 10 times per game. In fact, getting him the ball in space like that can be a nice running game replacement. The issue is we need to be able to run the ball inside the 5. And he's really not the guy for that, unless it's a sweep. And last night, we left Bush on the field for almost every offensive play. That's why we need a poor man's Reggie Bush on the roster. Once Thomas is healthy, we have him and Johnson as big backs, plus Hilliard and Clay. They need a RB with speed and good hands, someone who can fill the Bush role for a couple series per game.

Yesterday Ricky had 63 yards on 12 carries for a 5.2 ypc against Pittsburgh.

It’s safe to say Ireland is still learning on the job.

I agree with others, letting Ronnie and Ricky both go was not a smart move. If Thomas can’t get on the field, or can’t cut it once he does, we’re in sorry shape at RB. If that’s the case – this regime has taken what was once a positional strength and turned it into junk.
