First a report comes out that De Smith and Goodell and each other staffs have been meeting without players or owners.
Second, a report comes out that DeSmith and Goodell flew together to rookie symposium put on by NFLPA. and Goodell is expected to speak to the rookies that are at the NFLPA sponsored event.
Third-
THe NFL itself meaning the league, just tweeted that DeSmith and Goodell are expected to release a joint statement shortly, that was about 15 minutes ago.
SO if a deal is not done, it is very very close. It seems the conflic is to the point where Goodell and DeSMith are showing mutual respect for each other and the position they are in togethers. My guess is that a deal is done in principal...
It appears DeSmith and Goodell are on the same page and now must sell the deal to those that they each represent. The Devil can be in the details of closing a deal like this, with so many different parties involved.
A good lawyer once told me, when you get to a point of conflict in a business deal, where lawyers are involved, you are not going to experience the pleasure of this process being behind you, with out a little pain. If you expect a pain free experience, you are just not realistic..
RIght now, that is what De Smith and Goodell's, speeches sound like to the hardliners with in their group..lol
DeSmith I agree has a much easier sell, a majority of the people he represent are only affected by the lockout. Even in the new deal 95% of players salaries will not be affected. None of them will make less in the next deal except for the very top and top ten rookies. So what is the sell, there really isnt one.
Now some owners have real financial issues and what is being negotiated has a direct impact on their bottom line, so I believe you right and it is a much harder sell for Goodell. But owners are also use to this type of stuff as well, if they dont have the 9 votes it doesnt matter so much. And i think owners understand that, if you dont have the votes, it doesnt matter your postion... And so it seems Goodell most likely has the votes IMO, even if 8 teams vehemently oppose the new deal.
