Well, 2 Superbowl wins, 3 appearances, one undefeated season....that trumps 1 Superbowl appearance (i.e. loss). I'm not comparing stats or potential. But, if you're comparing best EVER coach/qb pairs, you have to consider Walsh/Montana, Noll/Bradshaw, JJ/Aikman, Belichick/Brady, and, of course, Shula had runs with 2 great ones. It's arguable who is best, but you usually measure greatness by championships.
If Shula would have kicked Olividotti to the curb and, maybe, acquired a decent RB, then this would be no contest. But, that didn't happen. We had a better defense and running game in the 70's, along with a HoF WR...and QB. It was the total package back then. So, if you're going to rate Shula, you have to say the 70's was his pinnacle. Later on he got a great D (Killer B's) but a terrible offense. Then he had an amazing offense but horrible defense. A lot of that has to fall on Shula himself. He was the architect of our team for so many years.
