Mike Berardino is reporting Phil Merling could be dealt for a late 2nd or 3rd round pick.

I assume that is assuming Odrick will play DE....Personally I don't see the FO spending a first round pick on a guy to be a backup so that would mean Langford is being demoted which is also hard to believe. Starks and Langford ranked as the 2nd and 7th 34 DE's in 2009.

Jared is our new Nose Tackle.

I do think Merling will make a great 43 LE for some team. I mentioned months ago that we should trade him to make room for a starter but that was not a popular opinion.

34 Front:
LDE Langford
NT Odrick
RDE Starks

24 Front: Odrick and Starks

It was his opinion based on speculation that Odrick will be a backup DE. He is not really reporting it as a leak from the FO or anything.

Do you really think the FO drafted a guy in round 1 to be a backup?

Jay Ratliff was a similar player physically when he was drafted in 05 BUT he was a 7th round pick. Obviously the staff thought a lot more of Odrick than they did of Ratliff who is a two time Pro Bowler.

Is it possible that Merling moves to linebacker? At one point, there was mention of that. Holliday and Roth were tried there afterall. If we do trade him, we had better get good value.

Merling is 300lbs, not a linebacker

again I worry we are going to sell low on a player who is more valuable to us then the low rounder we will surely get for him,

Id trade him for a 2d or a 3d and another pick but not for any less--and I don't know if anyone will give that much

Merling is too fat. Is lazy during practice. In the coaches dog-house.

They don't like him. Flat out, don't like him.
