Drafting Dan Williams or Earl Thomas at #12

Everyone always talks about how Parcells won't take a WR in round 1. it may surprise some people that Parcells has never taken a DT or S in round 1 either. And the highest draft pick he spent on a DT was a 2nd rounder, Rick Terry, who started 3 games in his entire career. And the highest S he drafted was Lawyer Milloy in round 2, a strong safety.

I really doubt we'd take Dan Williams. NT are 2-down players. There are the rare ones who can collapse the pocket and be a factor in the pass rush. But, there are no indications that Williams is one of those guys. He didn't do it in college. And NT is a common position for rotations, sharing snaps. This regime turns over the bottom of the roster pretty often. They stuck with Paul Soliai last year, and he improved a lot from 2008. Soliai showed some real signs of developing. And we have Ferguson coming back for the last 8 games of the season, maybe. I think we need another young guy to contribute, and I think we will draft one. But, I also think the plan is to have this guy share snaps with Soliai and Ferguson, and to come off the field in obvious passing downs. So, I don't believe the #12 pick in the draft is the spot where you draft a rotation run stuffer.

As for Thomas, I think he is possibility, but he may not meet their prototypical size standards for the position. We need a guy to step in and start, so it could be a high pick. But, considering we need an OLB, too, I think OLB is the pick and the FS will come later.

Parcells' DT draftees:
1993 4th rd, Kevin Johnson, Texas Southern
1994 3rd rd, Ervin Collier, Florida A&M
1996 5th rd, Christian Peter, Nebraska
1996 6th rd, Devin Wyman, Kentucky St
1997 2nd rd, Rick Terry, North Carolina
1997 7th rd, Jason Ferguson, Georgia
1999 4th rd, Jason Wiltz, Nebraska
2006 6th rd, Montavious Stanley, Louisville

His S draftees:
1993 4th rd, Corwin Brown, Michigan
1996 2nd rd, Lawyer Milloy, Washington
1997 7th rd, Steve Rosga, Colorado
1998 3rd rd, Scott Frost, Nebraska
1998 3rd rd, Kevin Williams, Ok St
2006 5th rd, Pat Watkins, FSU

His 1st rd picks:
QB Drew Bledsoe
LB Chris Slade
LB Willie McGinest
CB Ty Law
WR Terry Glenn
LB James Farrior
CB Terrance Newman
RB Julius Jones
LB Demarcus Ware
LB Bobby Carpenter
OT Jake Long
CB Vontae Davis

Lots of LINEBACKERS there in his 1st round picks. Makes me confident that Sergio Kindell will be the guy. Or another OLB they might have ranked higher.

But remember.....Parcels did not become a GM until 1997 when he went to the Jets. He wanted out of NE because he didn't have enough input on player personnel...so you can throw out most of those NE players.

Julius Jones was a 2nd rounder.

We could drop down get a pick and take Golden Tate. this draft is fairly deep in LB & DL, even DB.

My bad on Jones. He was their first pick that year, but not a #1.

Parcells was the GM of the Patriots. It was part of how they lured him out of the broadcast booth, by making him head coach and GM. But, he was overruled on the Terry Glenn draft pick by the owner, and that was the beginning of the end his Patriots career. Ironically, Parcells would grow to think enough of Glenn that he brought him to Dallas.

He may have been GM but he did not have full control. Kraft had final say on personnel....and I can't find anywhere where he is even listed as GM.

anyway...

I don't get why they say safety is a deep position this year. Only 5 safeties ran a sub 4.5 40. Mays, Thomas, Berry, Darrel Stuckey and Major Wright....that I know of.

(BTW what is the deal with NFL.com? I really am not liking that web site. Too much flash and not enough substance. They only list the top performer and don't give all the info on every player. They only list 3 safeties. I want to be able to go to one page and see name, size/measurements and times for all the drills and a commentary from a scout.)

We need a starter this year and aren't getting one in FA or RFA. If we don't get Berry or Thomas then who can come in and start in year one on a 3-4 defense with 4.6 speed?

The only players I want at 12 at this point are Berry, Thomas, D. Morgan, Brandon Graham, Tate or maybe Demaryius Thomas.

you mean in the first. miami would trade down to take either wide out. i like all those players tho and i say any OLB that parcells has highest on his board i would be ok with. im really hoping for a FS in the first and a wideout in the second though.

We didn't get a WR in FA so Bryant or Tate may be a must unles there is a late round sleeper. The Cards have 2 3's and might be interested in moving up to get McClain?

1 Golden Tate
2 Nate Allen (another Allen!)
3 Toby Gerhart/Montario Hardesty
3 Koa Misi/Eric norwood/Linval Jospeh/Torrel Troup
4 Dennis Pitta/Clay Harbor/Jimmy Graham

I dont want Dan Williams that high. I dont think he is worth the #12 pick.

What will he do? Make tackles? No. Pressure the QB? No. Eat up blocks? Maybe. We are not even sure of that. A 3-4 DT this high is very risky unless they are a sure fire pick....ala Holai Ngata (spelling?).

I think value wise, you can take a guy in the 2nd or 3rd round that has the same potential as Williams.

Williams is not on the same level as Ngata or any of the other great 3-4 NT's......so why take him at 12???

This makes sense. Which really leads us to a top WR or pass rusher.

Other than Bryant(and who really knows with him, maybe it is us he is laying low for !) 12 is too high for a WR and may be for Graham or Kindle.

if we take a Graham or Kindle WR pickens will be more chellenging in the second, but then when you look at history, who really knows.

Koa Misi is jumping up the charts after the SR bowl and workouts

Morgan Burnett, Major Wright & Kam Chancellor(6'3,230,4.6) 2-3 round FS

A friend's neighbor is west coast scout for the Bears and has been all over Misi & Robert Johnson of Utah

I really don't believe that NT will be the pick at #12. If there was a guy who is a great run stuffer and was known for his pass rush, then yes, go for it. But, Williams is not that guy. There isn't a prototypical NT type in this draft that projects to have pass rush skills. That means they are 2-down players. And as such, they don't warrant the #12 pick.
