Everyone got in town at the Combine today which starts tomorrow. Rumor at the combine being reported by Greg Bedard the beat writer for the Packers is the Dolphins will pay what it takes to get Karlos Dansby.
I've heard your argument before, and don't buy it for a wholesale strategy, but admit we may have to stretch it for a few guys.
salary cap may be here a lot sooner than you know. If it does come quickly (players cave in, or otherwise) we run into dumping quality guys for the overspend effort for a few.
Again ... we'll likely have to pay some extra to get the defensive upgrades we need ... andno we don't have enough draft picks to fill all of our needs ... but we're going to have to pick and choose wisely, and hopefully get lucky.
Front loading won't work, I heard on Sirius NFL radio yesterday when they get a deal done they are going to pro-rate next years salary in the contract. An un-capped year next year is only beneficial for dumping a big contract and not taking a big salary cap hit.

I actually agree with the NFLPA director that once the Salary Cap goes away, it will never come back. Once that toothpaste is out of the container it ain't going back in so to speak

That is if you believe there will ever be a salary cap again which among many in the inner NFL circles believe there won't be. It's risky business to roll that dice but one I think the teams that do roll might hit jackpot on!
All that money on the Dolphins offensive line...we need to add some defensive play makers and equal it out a bit more. Porter's inflated salary is gone so we have room to spend.
09 cap numbers...
Porter 7.6 mil
Will Allen 5.6 mil
Crowder 4.0 mil
Bell 4.05 mil
Fergy 4.0 mil
Starks 3.95 mil
Torbor 3.6 mil
G. Wilson 3.2 mil
Ayodele 2.75 mil
J.Allen 2.6 mil
Cutting Porter, Torbor, Ayodele saves us about 14 mil. Add Fergy's savings and it goes up to 18 mil.
There is too much money there for guys that are not earning it. With the exception of Starks....none of the top 10 highest paid players did.
You can't tell me we can't find better options than Ayodele and Torbor for the money. Torbor has to go.
Dansby could do wonders for our defense. Calvin Pace signed a 6 year 42 mil (22 guaranteed/20 bonus) deal last year with the Jets and the word is that Dansby is better. I wouldn't have a problem with that kind of contract. He is twice the player Crowder is at 4 mil.
Ayodele and Torbor are making 6.35 combined.
Sign Dansby at 7-8 mil, JT at about 3 to 3.5 mil. Draft an OLB and we are in pretty good shape. Just need to add a NT. That is the tough part.
Only time will tell who's right Mike but I think the owners absolutely want one and I listen to the NFL channel almost non-stop and i've never heard an "NFL insider" say they don't. When you get an opinion you seem to want to ram it down everyones throats as being gospel but like I said only time will tell who's right on this. I think this opting out was something the players probably pushed for in their last contract negotiations thinking they would have the owners by the balls and the owners have figured out a way to exploit it on a short term basis. The key word being "short term", no salary cap in the long term would benifit the players tremendously, who do you think pushed for a salary cap in the 1st place? certainly not the players.
Talk to me next week when the owners opt out. Then you can tell me I'm right.
If you think the owners can opt out, then lockout the players in 2011 (which they will). THEN say we want a cap....have it end up going to Congress or an arbitration and the owners can sell the public they want a cap, when THEY are the ones who opted out of the salary cap.....GOOD LUCK!!! Try selling that one to anyone with a brain!
When ALL THEY HAD TO DO, is let this current CBA run out, then fight for what they wanted in the next one. It isn't like it was 15 years away they had to wait.
The owners are rolling the dice the players will crack. Because under Upshaw they cracked every time. But Gene Upshaw is dead...and DeMarcus isn't Upshaw!
I think the owners are making a grave mistake here. Hell you heard Jerry Jones mid-season and he got fined for esentially giving away the owners playbook in all of this saying, he and the other successful ownes are sick and tired of supporting the failing franchises. If you think every owner wants a cap your out of your mind. The owners "that matter" dont' want one and they are calilng the shots and pulling the strings on Goodell

Don't you have me on ignore??? Oh wait, another lie from you. NEVERMIND!

While you are entitled to your opinion ... this is Nonsense IMHO:
Yes it is true that once the toothpaste is out of the tube you can't put it back in. Were however not talking about toothpaste here however.
The salary cap is a key lever the owners are not likely to give up on. I also provides balance on the players side.
I also would like to see a rookie cap come to be, as it is currently out of balance and too risky to have the number one pick because of it.
He's living proof why siblings shouldn't date. Time to join the ever increasing ranks of the "ignore stupid" club. Pretty soon he will be arguing with himself....again.
