Could we pursue Peppers if released? Adding Peppers or Wilfork & Rolle would be big and allow us to focus on LB, WR & RB in the draft and make some trades.

I am now thinking Hampton or Picket may be easier to get than Wilfork. Peppers wants to play OLB and I don't know how he would do in coverage. His asking price may be too big for a player his age that has never played LB'er.

Hey while we are at it I think C-pepper wants back as well... I dont mean to be so sarcastic I am just tired of signing big name free agents that dont pan out. We have a great staff with a great eye for talent and I think that we should focus on building thorugh the draft. I am all for signing FA roll players but not big name guys that are on the down side of their prime. JMHO

J.Pepper- 16.7 million dollars in 2009... OUCH!!! talk about a cap buster. Cant do it... you can sign 10 middle of the road guys with that much money. He will be hitting the market looking for huge money.

What big name free agent have we signed since BP got here?

The jury is still out on the staffs eye for talent. I though the same thing after our first season with the FA's and that draft but the 2009 draft is questionable as is our FA pickups.

Starks is the only FA pickup that has really panned out.

The Fergy/Fasano trade was a good one.

Penni and Fasano had one good year. Nate Garner was a good p/u.

They are going to need a huge draft this year to keep pace in the AFC East.

THe CB's we drafted have shown promise but the jury is still out. We still finished 27th in pass d.

Pat White was a waste and Pat Turner never saw the field. Hope he's not another Ernest Wilford.

I am not trying to rip on them b/c I think the staff has done a good job but we regressed in personnel last year and they HAVE to make up for it this year.

I'd say Chad Pennington counts.

The pass D ranking was NOT a reflection on our CBs. Wilson played atrocious at FS, Will Allen went down forcing Vontae Davis into action earlier than planned, and our pass rush was inconsistent (due in no small part to Joey Porter). All these issues are fixable, and signing Nolan as our DC will pay HUGE dividends. He'll use our talent MUCH more effectively than Pasqualoni did.

Did you forget that we had very few injuries in 2008, then lost our starting QB, RB, CB, and NT in 2009? Our talent was actually better in 2009, but we had to make a lot more adjustments exposing our lack of depth. We didn't need that depth in 2008.

This front office has been horrible in free agency. Their biggest signing,Smiley, is never healthy.

Then we overpay for a guy like Gabril Wilson. Then we sign guys like Wilford and Green. Sure they were cut and had no cap damage, but they did nothing. And we could have signed other players who might have contributed on the field in their place.

The one move that has stood out and actually surpased expectations is Randy Starks. Who, while I like and is very good, lets be honest isn't a corner-stone type player or anything to get too excited about. Pennington fell in their lap last minute after training cap started so I give them very little credit for that. You can't seriously count that.

I have no confidence in this front office when it comes to free agency. Their track record has been horrible and their grade in the free agent market after 2 years is an F. Draft wise I give them a B-, their draft picks have panned out for the most part. But strictly talking free agency this group seems to be clueless.

That is only one and he was not widely sought after.

It was not solely a reflection of our young DB's but our safeties are not the only ones that gave up big plays. It is to be expected though b/c they are young. Smith had ZERO ints but was good overall. we ranked in the top of the league for sacks. It was not consistent though.

Yes injuries played a huge part in last seasons outcome but that does not change the fact that our FA acquisitions were lame and our draft was average.

Mike,

Smiley has been huge as a player, leader, and a mentor for our younger players. He was our best O-Lineman last year.

FA's are not typically the kind of players you build around. Starks has been huge, but he won't be the cornerstone of our defense, and that shouldn't be expected.

Sure, Pennington fell in our lap, but we could have chosen not to sign him or he could have signed with someone else. I give BP a huge amount of credit for this. CP was 2nd in MVP voting in '08.

Wilson showed flashes of brilliance, and a lot of bad play. I put a lot of that on Pasqualoni. I'll be interested to see what Nolan can do with him if we keep him. He did pretty well with our other castoffs (Hill and Goodman).

We certainly not as good as NE in signing free agents, but it helps when a team is a winner. We've been so bad for so long, it's tough to attract good FAs. I think that will turn around eventually. In the meantime, I still prefer we build through the draft.

Our draft was average? Based on the drafts we've had in the last 10 years, I think last year's draft was an unmitigated success. We got 2 starting CBs, a possible starting WR, and what appears to be a decent Safety (not sure if he's a starter yet, though). It blows away any of Wanny's drafts.

That's true Wanny and co. sucked big time.

We just need to hit on an elite franchise player. Some may yet turn out to be but so far I have only seen evidence of these players being good players with potential.

We need to hit on someone like Patrick Willis, Chris Johnson, Darrell Revis, Richard Seymour, Vince Wilfork, etc.

That would be sweet. We really don't know, yet, how good Jake Long, Chad Henne, Vontae Davis, or Sean Smith will be, though. One, or more, of those guys could be in that class.

Should have said last season (his first with Miami). That's what I meant.

I'm a bit tired of your ignorance. You obviously haven't paid attention. In the first have of the Saints game, when we were blitzing and attacking, Wilson made a number of good plays. We didn't sign this guy off the street. He played FS for the Giants the year they won the Superbowl.

That's naive Mike. It's not all about money, and I don't want ANY players that play for money only. There are a lot of other factors involved. Some players like being closer to home. Some like playing for certain coaches. MOST players want to win!! If a team pays top dollar for every Free Agent (outbidding all other teams), then they would be overpaying for players and not have enough money to pay their draft picks or their current players.

I'm not deflecting it. You're suggesting they've done NOTHING in Free Agency that was good. I'm pointing out they've had both hits and misses. It's not unlike most NFL teams.

WRONG. don't put words in my mouth!!!....but don't sign guys who get cut in training camp (eric green)....never play (Wilford)...or just flat out stink (Wilson).

Im not saying be George Steinbrenner,....but at least sign guys who can make the team and play a little and have some ability. And don't overpay for turds (ala Wilson)

Randy Starks was the only Free Agency player the Dolphins scored a hit on? Wasn't Wake a FA signing? Wasn't Bess a FA signing? Wasn't Pennington a FA signing? Oh Mike....
