well my understanding is unofficial is with human error where a person actually is I guess on the field and is clocking you (say 4.75). Then you film goes upstairs and they clock your replay where they can get a more accurate point at which to start and stop the clock (say 4.67). I think you may still have some human error (unless automated some how). But I think the official times are most accurate. I would throw proday numbers out of the window since you find things like slow clickers and shorter than 40 yard fields to give their athletes better times...

Combine moved to the new stadium this year. They said somehow that had something to do with something. Didn't understand the explaination, but that is one theory being talked about

I still think everyone was clocked slow. It may be a slow track as well.

yeah but the problem is that this was the fastest wr class i can remember in sometime (what like 2 sub 4.3's and 3-4 sub 4.4's- unofficial) and I think they ran on the same track.

I hate to say I told ya so but....

NFL scouts will likely be busy booking flights to Gainesville, Tallahassee and other sites of upcoming Pro Day workouts over the next couple of days after a report surfaced on Pro Football Talk that malfunctioning equipment may have skewed 40-yard dash times at last month’s NFL Combine in Indianapolis.

It seemed just not right when, for example, Florida’s Percy Harvin, who trained hard for the event and said he hoped to run in the 4.2 to 4.3 range, wound up clocking 4.41, slower than five other wide receivers. And when only two cornerbacks were able to come in under 4.5, there was talk that even the best at the position might not be fast enough to play at the NFL level.

Well, its a single report all based on an article by ProFootballTalk.com ... I long ago stopped listening to anything they report on because 90% of it is pure speculation, quite often mirroring outlandish theories presented by random posters on internet forums... so its quite possible that YOU were the "source" for that story on PFT.

Percy Harvin may be disappointed, but 4.4 is still pretty damn fast, and not many receivers ever run much faster than that. I don't think there is much to this story personally.

I know PFT is just so bad. I mean NBC, the NFL Network, and The Sporting News all hired the guy (Florio) who runs the site.........they must suck!! (give me a break)

Florio can be a legitimate reporter when he wants to be; but he does love to speculate, and when he speculates he is usually wrong. He also mocks players and teams that he doesn't like.

I guess time will tell. Historically, players run faster at their pro days anyway...for the most part.

I have a feeling players like Malcolm Jenkins and Jeremy Maclin will run signifigantly faster.

If you listen to the experts, players that do exceedingly well in the vertical jump and broad jump usually run a fast 40 yard dash. It usually translates into a formula where you can pretty much predict what they will run based on the tests and size/weight ratio. This did not translate in several instances this year.

A good example of this would be Beanie Wells and Larry English.

Lets see what happens on March 13 for Ohio State and March 27 for English.

Michael Johnson ran a 4.59 at his PD and 4.75 at the Combine

Paul Kruger ran a 4.79 at pro day and 4.90 at combine.

Michael Bennett (DE) ran a 4.86 at PD and 5.02 at combine.

There are several others who have run better times at their PD's by about a full tenth of a second.

More to come.

yeah but there are stories of people having shorter fields (faster 40's) at the proday and also it is a hand stop watch which if me and you were clocking the same guy we could be more than a 10th of a second difference (meaning I could get 4.6 and you get 4.5). That is why at the combines everyone is on the same track and they go back and make it official by looking on a monitor to reduce human (stop watch) error. I agree that the db's ran slower than I have every seen and the lb's were also slower (maybe 0.2 slower) but the receivers were way faster so I dont know. But me personally I dont put to much stock in proday times.

Weren't these all filmed? you're telling me that with today's technology they couldn't go back an get an accurate 40 from the tape? just recheck everyone's 40 from the film. mystery solved.

... and that is not abnormal from any other year to see players perform better at their pro days for any number reasons... Why do you think they even re-run at their pro days?

NFLDRAFTSCOUT.COM

NFL scouts will likely be busy booking flights to Gainesville, Tallahassee and other sites of upcoming Pro Day workouts over the next couple of days after a report surfaced on Pro Football Talk that malfunctioning equipment may have skewed 40-yard dash times at last month’s NFL Combine in Indianapolis. And when only two cornerbacks were able to come in under 4.5, there was talk that even the best at the position might not be fast enough to play at the NFL level. Harvin actually lost nine pounds training specifically to run the 40 and had confidence he would be fast. For him at least, 4.41 does not qualify as fast. Harvin, fellow UF receiver Louis Murphy and other Gator hopefuls will get another shot at Florida’s Pro Day on Wednesday, March 18.
