Nov 20, 1998: -- Jones Named Player of Week --

Dolphins strongside linebacker Robert Jones was named the AFC's defensive player of the week for his performance against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. During that game, he recorded 8 tackles and 2 sacks against the Panthers, helping the defense to limit Carolina to 9 points.

Jones, who as signed by the Dolphins as a free agent this summer, was cut by the St. Louis Rams in a salary cap move earlier this year. After arriving in camp, he impressed the coaches enough to take over the strongside linebacker position from Anthony Harris, who was the starter at that position last year.

So far this year, Jones has racked up 3 sacks - 2 coming against the Panthers, which equals his entire career total before 1998. This is the first year that Jones has played outside linebacker in the NFL and this is the first time Jones has won the player of the week honors. In his six previous seasons, Jones was a middle linebacker.

In other news, the Dolphins have claimed defensive back Raymond Hill off waivers from the Buffalo Bills. Hill went to camp with the Bills this summer as a rookie free agent out of Michigan State and played in 4 games with them before he was released earlier this week.

My Comments:

It's always good for a team to have a player who distinguishes himself in this way and Jones is the first player on the Dolphins named to be the player of the week. Zach Thomas was the AFC's defensive player of the month for September, but Jones is the first player of the week.

Jones was another of those windfalls that the Dolphins got this year after he was cut by the Rams, who clearly made a mistake. He has been a bargain at $325,000 this year, but he will be a free agent at the end of this season and the Dolphins will probably have to come up with a lot more money for him next year.

As for Raymond Hill, he is a pretty big defensive back at 6'0" and 182 pounds, and he's supposed to be pretty good a press coverage, but you have to wonder how good he could be if the Bills cut him.
