*** DOLPHINS NEWS ***
May 28, 1998: -- Crawford Fractures Hip --

** Crawford Fractures Hip

According to the Miami Herald this morning, linebacker Mike Crawford has suffered a stress fracture to his hip that will sideline him for the next several weeks. The fracture apparently developed gradually and was not the result of any one incident.

Provided there are no complications, Crawford will not require surgery and his hip will heal naturally with rest. He will be re-evaluated in a month and probably won't participate in any drills until training camp opens in late July.

** Bowens Will Probably Participate in QB Camp

According to his agent Drew Rosenhaus, Tim Bowens will participate in the Dolphins quarterback camp next week. He had been held out of the first mini-camp of the season because of fear of injury, but will participate next week on a limited basis.

Rosenhaus said Wednesday "We have an injury agreement and he has that guaranteed offer so he'll be there. The thing he'll avoid is doing the one-on-one stuff and the pass rush drills because the chance of injury there is greater. "

** Kidd Gets New Contract Offer

Punter John Kidd got a new contract offer from the team this week, but Kidd is still weighing his options. As of right now, he's the only unrestricted free agent left from last year's team.

The terms of the offer were not disclosed, but Kidd is reportedly not very happy with the salary that they're offering.

** QB Camp Opens Next Monday

The Dolphins open their 2nd quarterback camp of the 1998 season on Monday June 1st and it will run through Thursday, June 4th. All the veterans and most of the rookies are expected to work out in a camp that will concentrate mainly on learning the new offensive system that JJ has put in place this year.

Rookies, however, are barred by the NFL from participating in the camp as long as their colleges are in session. Missing camp for this reason will be Brad Jackson, and rookie free agents Derrick Steagall, Derrick Shepard, Ken Celaj and Landon Smith.

Troy Drayton will probably be back and working out with the team, but Shane Burton (rotator cuff), Brent Smith (abdomen) and Jerry Wilson (knee) will participate on a very limited basis, if they work out at all.

My Comments:

When I saw that Crawford had fractured his hip, my first thought was that he was jumping off of roofs again. However, it turns out that this is one of those injuries that just happened to him over the course of the spring.

It's not good news, of course, but he should be ready for full training camp in July.

I'm kind of indifferent to Bowens attending the camp, because he doesn't really need any remedial work - or shouldn't, at this stage of the game. However, it will allow the coaches to evaluate what kind of shape he's in, which has apparently been a concern.

As for the quarterback camp, the guys with something to prove are Lawrence Phillips, Larry Shannon, and Yatil Green. They all fell a little short of expectations in the mini-camp and it will be interesting to see if they have improved any over the past 6 weeks.
