Sep 02, 1997: -- Stubbs Out for Year --

** Stubbs Out for Year **

The Herald is reporting this morning that defensive lineman Danny Stubbs will be placed on injured reserve today following successful surgery to repair a tear in the right patellar tendon. Stubbs was injured in the 4th quarter of the game against the Colts on Sunday.

Stubbs, who has never missed a regular season game in his career, according to the Herald, will be sidelined for 4 to 6 months while his knee recovers.

The Dolphins have said that they have no plans to sign a player to fill in for Stubbs and have stated that they will go with defensive end Dunstan Anderson, who was a surprise free agent signee this summer. Anderson was inactive for the Colts game this weekend.

** Kidd Questionable With Hamstring Pull **

John Kidd pulled a hamstring on Sunday in the game against the Colts and is currently listed as questionable by the team for Sunday's game against the Oilers.

As a result, the Dolphins are looking to hire a punter to punt in his place for just the next week or two. JJ has said that backup punter Olindo Mare' is not the answer for this coming game. He praised Mare's work this weekend, but doesn't want him to be in that position next week.

** Wainwright Healthy **

The Dolphins' longsnapper Frank Wainwright is recovering quickly enough that he should be ready for the game against the Oilers. The team came close to playing him against the Colts, but finally decided to place him on the inactive roster.

** Zach Thomas Recovering Slowly **

Zach had a bad day on Sunday, but was feeling better yesterday and there are hopes that he may be ready to play on a limited basis against the Oilers on Sunday.

My Comments:

It's hard to imagine that any team could have as many injuries as the Dolphins are having this year, but they just seem to keep on coming. In fact, I don't remember a season where there were as many injuries in the league as there have been so far this year.

Still, it's not like Daniel Stubbs is a great player or as effective as some of the other players on the defensive line. But his experience and abilities will be missed.

This is, of course, the big chance that Dunstan Anderson has been waiting for during his whole career. If you read up on Anderson, you'll see that he has played a number of different positions during his career, but has finally found a home on the defensive line.

Anderson did look pretty good during the preseason, getting 6 tackles and a sack in a relatively small amount of playing time. He will have his work cut out for him this week, however, as the Dolphins get ready to take on Eddie George and the Oilers.

In other news, I hope that John Kidd is recovered enough to punt on Sunday. I'd hate to see the team bring in some unknown to punt for one game and then waive him. I almost think it would be better to have Mare' continue to punt.

As for Zach Thomas, I would rather have him sit on Sunday than come back too fast and risk aggravating his injury.
