Mar 24, 1997: -- Dawsey Signed --

ESPNET is reporting this afternoon that the Dolphins have signed WR Lawrence Dawsey to a 2 year contract for undisclosed terms. Dawsey agreed to terms with the Dolphins last Thursday.

Originally drafted from Florida State by Tampa Bay in the third round of 1991 draft, Dawsey played very well his first two years in the league. In his rookie season, he caught 55 passes for 818 yards and 3 touchdowns and was named to a number of all-rookie teams.

However, a knee injury in 1993 slowed Dawsey down and he was out of football for most of 93 and some of 1994. In 1996, Dawsey was released by Tampa Bay for salary cap reasons and signed with the Giants, where he played last season, starting 4 games for them.

My Comments:

When Dawsey agreed to terms, I was confused about this signing. After a little thought and some information from some other readers, I think I understand it a little better. I'm not sure I agree with it, however.

Dawsey is basically a possession receiver. He's being brought in to provide some depth and fill in for Scott Miller and Randal Hill, assuming that neither player returns. It's a little hard to rate his performance last season because he only had Dave Brown throwing to him, but he's supposed to have pretty good hands and be tough on the inside.

The problem comes when you look at what the Dolphins' needs are. What they need is more speed and a receiver that is a deep threat. Dawsey doesn't provide that. Instead, he takes up cap and roster space that might be used to pursue someone with more speed who is a better deep threat.

Now, perhaps he'll work out and become a terrific player, and I certainly hope he does, but I'm afraid he's just another average receiver who won't do anything to fill in the gaps in the Dolphins' offense.
