*** DOLPHINS NEWS ***
Feb 20, 1997: -- Gardener OK after Shooting --

ESPN is reporting this evening that Dolphins defensive lineman and first round draft pick Darryl Gardener was shot in the jaw in Dallas early this morning. He was with several companions at around 2:30 AM, when he was shot.

After the shooting occurred, he managed to drive himself and his companions to the hospital. He was operated on to remove bullet fragments that were lodged in the base of his tongue and to repair his jaw. Two people he was with were treated and released.

At this time, it isn't known why he was shot, but witnesses are apparently saying that Gardener didn't provoke the incident and was not involved in anything that might account for the shooting.

My Comments:

This is a scary piece of news, but it appears that Gardener will recover from the shooting without any problems. In all likelihood, he will be fine by the time that training camp starts.
