Dolphins News: Marino to Get New Contract?

*** DOLPHINS NEWS ***

Mar 18, 1996: -- Marino to Get New Contract? --

According to Will McDonough of the Boston Globe, Dan Marino's agent Marvin Demoff has told McDonough that he expects that Dan Marino will sign a new contract with the Dolphins sometime in the next 30 days.

In the Sunday Boston Globe, McDonough's column quotes Demoff as saying that Marino wants to play football "forever" and that he will sign a new restructured contract with the Dolphins. Demoff did not release any details, other than to say that the new contract would help the Dolphins with their current salary cap.

My Comments:

Sports agents are not the most (how shall I put this delicately?) "reliable" of sources for information about the league, especially when it involves their clients. As an example, look at the recent dealings with Troy Vincent's agents.

However, the only reason I can think of that Demoff would make this statement to McDonough is that he and Marino really want to sign a new contract. If this is the case, then this is good news and should put to rest most of the trade rumors.

The other thing that was interesting about the article is that Demoff said that the Dolphins' new offense should actually extend Marino's career with an increased emphasis on the run. He speculated that this should allow Marino to play longer than he would have under the old system. He also said that Marino has had a number of conversations with JJ about the new offense during the off-season.

Assuming for the moment that all of this is true, this is an indication that Marino wants to stay in Miami and wants to finish his career as a Dolphin.
