*** DOLPHINS TRAINING CAMP ***
Aug 06, 1999
: -- Day 10 - Aug 5th --
TODAY'S REPORT:
The Dolphins conducted one training session on Thursday, Aug
5th at 3:00 PM in the afternoon. The biggest news to come out of that
practice is that apparently Yatil Green had knee problems while warming
up and was held out of practice. JJ says that Yatil Green's knee is
sore and that he won't be participating in any of the practices against
the Buccaneers, nor will he play in the scrimmage on Saturday.
The word out of Miami is that Green's knee is just sore and as
of this writing, if there had been anything more serious wrong with his
knee, we would have heard of it by know.
Also, Zach Thomas got a minor concussion in practice on
Wednesday and will sit out the next couple of days of practice.
On the field, cornerback Jerry Wilson made his presence felt by
picking off a pass, FB Rob Konrad had a nice run on the inside drill
(which is similar to the middle drill, but not quite as tough) and JJ
Johnson made some tough yards of his own in the inside drill.
The offense was not nearly as impressive in the 2 minute drill,
where they failed to get into scoring position on either series. And
Cecil Collins fumbled a handoff, which put a damper on some decent runs
he made during some other drills. Also, Craig Erickson and Grey
Ruegamer fumbled a snap.
Overall, JJ indicated that this was not a particularly good day
of practice and was irritable when answering questions to reporters
after practice.
OUTSTANDING PLAYS:
Jerry Wilson's interception seems to be the big play of the
day, but Rob Konrad's run was a close second. On the downside, we
have Collins' and Ericksons' fumbles.
JJ'S COMMENTS:
JJ said that he doubted that Zach or Yatil Green would
participate in the practices or scrimmage against the Bucs. He also
said that the soreness in Yatil's knee was something that was expected.
For the scrimmage on Saturday, JJ said that he wasn't going to
look at one position any more than others and that he was going to keep
it very, very basic. He said that the coaches would be looking
primarily at the younger players.
ROSTER MOVES:
Just one day after he joined the Dolphins, DE Barry Mitchell
was waived.
FUTURE EVENTS:
The Dolphins are going to practice twice on Friday against the
Buccaneers and on Saturday at 1:30, the Dolphins will hold a scrimmage
against the Bucs in the Orange Bowl.
INJURY REPORT:
LB Zach Thomas (concussion), WR Yatil Green (sore knee) and DT
Walter Scott (knee) left practice early. TE Troy Drayton (bruised
quadriceps), RB Juan Johnson (back), DT Antoine Simpson (back), and FB
Roosevelt Potts (calf) missed practice and are day-to-day. LB Anthony
Harris (groin surgery) is out 10-12 weeks and LBs Sammie Burroughs
(back) and O.J. Brigance (back) are on the physically unable to perform
list.
EYEWITNESS REPORTS:
Sorry, there are no eyewitness reports again today.
My Comments:
The problems with Yatil's knee are worrisome, to be sure, but
now that 24 hours have passed since it happened, we would have heard if
it was more serious than just stiffness. There was one report that
Yatil was actually having ankle problems, not knee problems, but that
turned out to be false.
If it was anyone other than Yatil Green, we would all be saying
that this was not serious. But because it's Yatil, I'm sure that
Dolphins fans everywhere are worried.
Personally, I don't think it's time to panic. It's likely that
Yatil will have some soreness and stiffness in his knee from time to
time and we'll just have to learn to put up with the situation - along
with Yatil.
Believe me, when I think it's time to panic, I'll let you know.
On another note, it looks as if the Dolphins/Bucs scrimmage on
Saturday will be viewable on SportsChannel Florida on DirecTV channel
634 at 1:30 PM. If you don't have a DirecTV satellite dish, you might
want to check out my "places to watch" list at
listed there will be carrying the scrimmage.
Or, if you're lucky enough to be in Miami this weekend, you can
go to the Orange Bowl to watch it live.
I think that you should remember that it's not really about
winning and losing - it's about watching the rookies and new guys
perform against a real team for the first time this year.
